Scarborough Hotels Face Uncertain Future

The past couple of years has seen turmoil in the Scarborough hotel market with closures due to hotels housing refugees quickly followed by others taking in only workers from the Woodsmith fertiliser mine in Whitby and closing their doors to holidaymakers.

Mine owners Anglo American are fighting a takeover bid from mining giant BHP and part of that plan involves “slowing” the work on site leading to possible job losses of around 1100 or the 1400 workforce.  BHP currently have their own large fertiliser plant so if their bid is successful it is believed they are unlikely to overturn the decision so either outcome is bleak.

The deadline for BHP to either make an official offer or withdraw has been extended to  Wednesday May 29th.
