The project, a partnership with HMP Humber, was an opportunity for the learners to explore their own creative talents, celebrating how everyone can be an artist. - The very young won’t sit still to watch a show and Lyngo Theatre doesn’t expect them to. Their show Egg and Spoon, which comes to Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre on 19 and 20 February, is a perfect gentle introduction to the magic of theatre, suitable for ages 0 to five; an interactive romp through the seasons where the audience comes in and out of their magic circle and get to open all the gifts of nature. Percy and April get them settled on comfortable cushions and introduce them to Birdy, still hiding in his glowing egg. They have to wait till spring if they want to see him so it’s time to begin a hands-on journey through the year. The audience will run through the rain and the falling leaves and sleep under the snow till the sun wakes them up for the butterfly party. Written by Marcello Chiarenza, Egg and Spoon is adapted by Patrick Lynch, who also performs; Patrick is the presenter of the popular CBeebies programmes Razzledazzle and Let's Celebrate. Music is by Carlo Cialdo Capelli and the Design Assistant is Elena Marini. Egg and Spoon can be seen at the SJT at 2pm on Wednesday 19 February, and at 10am and 2pm on Thursday 20 February. Tickets are available from the box office on 01723 370541 and online at www.sjt.uk.com.

- Ruth Moody Trio - live music
- 2/1/2025-19:30

- Old Parcels Office, Station Car Park, Scarborough
- https://www.scarborough.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/IMG_3802.jpeg
- A Scarborough debut for this award winning Canadian artist and co- founder of the Wailin Jenny’s. Ruth Moody is an award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her otherworldly soprano voice and her inspired songwriting have gained the admiration of the hearts, minds, and ears of millions of listeners. As a solo artist and a founding and current member of The Wailin’ Jennys, she has garnered two JUNO Awards and performed to rapt audiences in sold-out venues around the globe. Music runs through Ruth’s veins. A first-generation Canadian immigrant, her early years were spent on a goat farm in rural Manitoba, where she grew up singing in harmony with her brother and sisters. Raised by a master musician mother and an English teaching father, melody and verse were married in her mind long before she ever picked up a guitar. By age twenty she was traversing the continent in an old brown van with the wild and untamed progressive roots band, Scrüj MacDuck. She never stopped moving, and went on to co-found The Wailin’ Jennys in 2002, and began her own solo career in 2010. Ruth’s solo albums The Garden and These Wilder Things received glowing reception from fans and critics alike. Her collaborations with the legendary Mark Knopfler on These Wilder Things and his albums Privateering and Tracker brought her voice to music lovers across the world, and 2015 saw her performing in Europe and the UK in legendary venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, both as a support act and as a guest in Mark’s band. After riding the whirlwind of shows and opportunities that arose from the association with Mark, Ruth took some much-needed time off to start a family in 2016. Her brand new album, Wanderer (out May 17th on her own Blue Muse Records), is the chronicle of her life’s journey over the last ten years. Wanderer explores the emotional journey of motherhood, the joy and pain of life, the mysterious and complicated dance of love, and ultimately, the longing we all feel for home, wherever that may be. Recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville, the self-penned album was co-produced by Moody and Dan Knobler (Allison Russell, Lake Street Dive) and mixed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, First Aid Kit, The Decemberists). Moody brought together her favourite musicians and challenged herself to be as present and honest in her performance as possible. The result is a transcendent collection of ten deeply powerful and personal songs that reflect Moody’s inner world and wanderings. From the first note, the listener is immersed in a lush and intimate world, welcomed by sounds at once classic, mysterious, and enchanting: open-tuned guitars inspired by Moody’s heroes, Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling; soaring pedal steel; otherworldly vocals; intricate harmonies; and the rich echo-chamber reverb of the legendary Nashville studio. From the restless, nostalgic energy of ‘Seventeen’, a true-life story of unrequited love and an homage to Moody’s hometown of Winnipeg, to the jaw-droppingly beautiful duet with fellow Canadian roots music standout Joey Landreth on ‘The Spell of the Lilac Bloom’, the album takes the listener on a mesmerizing journey through time and space. The climactic title track, ‘Wanderer’, embodies the true spirit of love and belonging that we all seek in its repeated final chorus: “Love is Calling You Home”. Ruth splits her time between Vancouver Island and Nashville, TN, and when she is not on the road with her band or The Wailin’ Jennys, she spends her time writing, hiking, and keeping up with her seven-year-old son.

- Since Miles’ last tour finished at The London Palladium in 2017, he’s been in The Full Monty on Disney Plus, The Durrells and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? on ITV, as well as a heap of episodes of Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and Have I Got News For You. He’s made an award-winning radio series, he’s published a novel and he’s played the Emperor of Austria and Europe in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. Yet one sunny day in the middle of all this, he suddenly suffered a brain seizure. This led to the discovery of a tumour the size of a cherry tomato, and a rather pressing need to undergo major neurosurgery. Obviously, one doesn’t wish to make a big deal of it, but the experience has left him with a story to tell and a few things that he’d like to share with the room. So that’s exactly what he’s doing in his new show On I Bang – a tale about surprise, fear, luck, love and qualified medical practitioners.

- Egg and Spoon is an interactive romp through the seasons where you come in and out of our magic circle and get to open all the gifts of nature. Percy and April get you settled on our comfortable cushions and introduce you to Birdy, still hiding in his glowing egg. We have to wait until Spring if we want to see him, so it’s time to begin our hands-on journey through the year with flocks of real flying birds circling around our special growing tree. We’ll run through the rain and the falling leaves and sleep under the snow until Spring wakes us up for the butterfly party. This show has delighted children all over the world from New York to Singapore, and when Birdy comes out they all want to give him a little stroke and a feed! Egg and Spoon is a perfect gentle introduction to the magic of theatre. Suitable for ages 1-4

- Oasiz are one of the UK’s most authentic Oasis tribute bands. In 2023, a clip of Oasiz front man Steve performing as Liam went viral, racking up over 10 million views with fans convinced the clip was Liam Gallagher himself. The story was covered in the national press, including an appearance on national TV later that year. Oasiz's 2025 tour celebrates the 30th anniversary of the release of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory, with the setlist paying homage to the most memorable parts of Oasis’ record-breaking second album, plus all the big-hitting, career-spanning anthems you know and love.

- Power trio Lady Maisery and boundless songwriters O’Hooley & Tidow join forces again (at long last!) for the first time since their much loved annual collaboration as supergroup COVEN. Combining the vocal and multi-instrumental talents of Rowan Rheingans, Hazel Askew and Hannah James, Lady Maisery has enraptured audiences throughout the UK and Europe with their “generosity of spirit and joie de vivre that seems to emanate from every minute of their exuberant live shows” (Folk Radio UK). Their most recent album Tender is an arresting record exploring the power in vulnerability, the tenderness of collective wounds and strength in kindness, hailed “a beguiling blend of ancient and modern” (The Times) and “both nurturing and raw, a sensitive response to the times we are living in” (Daily Info). Much-loved Yorkshire folk duo Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow have been propelled into newfound fame for penning the theme tune to Sally Wainwright’s hit BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, earning them global admiration, an acting role for Belinda on the iconic TV drama Happy Valley, performances on Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, and concerts that sell out months in advance. Lady Maisery and O’Hooley & Tidow will each perform individual sets before joining their inimitable voices in song.

Led with movement and a banging 90s soundtrack played by a live band, this is a fast-paced, modern take on a timeless classic, proving Shakespeare's as relevant today as he's always been - a fragile peace is only as durable as opposing sides permit...

- A vibrant new adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, Love’s Labour’s Lost (more or less), has been announced for spring 2025 in a co-production between Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre and Prescot’s Shakespeare North Playhouse. The show follows on from the huge success of the two theatres’ co-production of The Comedy of Errors (more or less) in the spring of 2023, which was UK Theatre Award-nominated. This new adaptation, again by Elizabeth Godber and Nick Lane, will set Shakespeare’s story in mid-90s Ibiza. A stag do in Ibiza. A hen do in Menorca. What could go wrong? Everything… The stags have made a solemn promise to each other: this is a boys’ weekend. Don’t talk to any girls, don’t even think about any girls and most importantly, do not contact the hens. The hens are ready for fun in the sun when the resort calls to say they’ve had to relocate them… to a hotel in Ibiza. Both groups of revellers are stuck on the same Mediterranean island. Cue: shoddy disguises, mislaid love letters and theatrical chaos. Shakespeare's riotous comedy is brought to life in the nineties, featuring belting musical numbers in the era of boy bands and Girl Power. Co-writer Elizabeth Godber says: “I’m so excited to be back working with Nick, the SJT and Shakespeare North on another hilarious Shakespeare adaptation. Love's Labour's Lost is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, and to get the chance to play around with the language, develop the (already great) female characters, and add in plenty of 1990s pop classics has been an absolute joy! I can’t wait for audiences to come and see the show” it's funny, irreverent, and I'm sure Shakespeare would approve – he would have definitely been a Britpop fan!” Director Paul Robinson, who is Artistic Director at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, says: “We had the most enormous fun making The Comedy of Errors (more or less) in the spring of 2023, and our audiences did too! We couldn’t resist following it up with another of the Bard’s early comedies, this time set a decade later in the midst of the party era that was the 1990s. We’ll again be including some great music from the period, and just wait until you see those 90s fashions again…” Laura Collier, Creative Director of Shakespeare North Playhouse, says: “After the success of our 2023 co-production of Comedy of Errors (more or less) – a show so entertaining that people kept coming back for more – we knew we had to join forces again. "We're absolutely thrilled to be working with the Stephen Joseph Theatre again, alongside talented writers Nick Lane and Elizabeth Godber. We all share a deep love for Shakespeare and his timeless tales, and a passion for exploring and presenting fresh, exciting perspectives and reworkings. A perfect foundation for an outrageously fun Love’s Labour’s Lost. We can’t wait to see what lies in store when we’re all transported back to the 90s.” Love’s Labour’s Lost (more or less) can be seen at the Stephen Joseph Theatre from Thursday 27 March to Saturday 19 April 2025. Tickets are available from the Stephen Joseph Theatre box office on 01723 370541 and online at www.sjt.uk.com from Wednesday 4 September.

- Return visit from this ever popular artist “Canada’s own Queen of Americana” — Jan Hall, Folk Roots Radio Lynne Hanson is an Ottawa-based, Americana songwriter known for her high energy roots guitar driven live performances with an authenticity that’s as entertaining as it is disarming. Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, Lynne Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine, blue sky ballad to a full on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Her hard living music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s Queen of Americana.” And while her deep, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart. Winner of two Canadian Folk Music Awards, Hanson is known for her high energy, roots guitar driven live performances, whether playing solo or with her band the Good Intentions. She has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming. The prolific songwriter has released nine studio albums along with two books of poetry over her 18 year solo career. She’s toured extensively across North America, Europe and the UK, and appeared at leading international festivals including Take Root (Netherlands), Glasgow Americana (Scotland), Maverick Festival (UK), Kerrville Folk Festival (US), and Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada). She has also toured as support for Grammy-nominated artists like Gretchen Peters, Steve Forbert and Albert Lee. Lynne Hanson released her tenth studio album “Just A Poet” in Spring 2024.

- Radio 4 favourite, comedy legend, and ‘the 42nd best reason to love Britain’ (The Telegraph) JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH, is back with more hilarious stories and songs performed on his trusty Yamaha organ (with built-in auto accompaniment!) In RAISE THE OOF John celebrates 40 years in showbiz. Yes, it was 1985 when he met TV’s Clarinet Man - next door neighbour Ken Worthington who came last on New Faces in 73 (Tony Hatch crucified him!) “When I met Ken he was eating a CurlyWurly” recalls John, “although initially I thought it was a packet of sparklers, so I gave him a wide berth”, and the rest, as they say, is hysterical! “Actually, I feel rather calm” muses John, “although after forty years and still no chart success, perhaps I should be slightly anxious. My wife Mary says I should get a proper job, but there's not time - I'm about to retire! Besides, Comet - where I used to demonstrate audio equipment - no longer exists. As for the sweet factory in the Rotherham area where I worked as a security guard in the 1980's - that’s now an Axe Throwing Centre. Oof!" But I'm still posting off my songs (on cassette tape with Dolby so it's not too hissy) to cutting edge pop acts like Chris Rea and the Lighthouse Family, plus I'm still being booked for nostalgic singalongs at the local hospice (for petrol money only) so we have every reason to celebrate my long and illustrious career. Do come along and join me in punching the air, and helping - in an orderly and controlled fashion - to RAISE THE OOF!

- Considered to be one of the best live bands on the touring circuit, The Manfreds, featuring original Manfred Mann members Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, are excited to be returning to some of their favourite, more intimate, venues in 2025. They are considered one of the finest and most respected bands from the 1960’s era. Their numerous hits were not just ‘pop’ songs, many were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance. As a result, their records have a timeless quality and, some 60 years on, The Manfreds, with original front man Paul Jones, will be performing, many of their hits including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60’s and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of Jazz and Blues covers and tracks from their individual solo albums. Paul Jones, with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Tom McGuinness on guitar, Pete Riley on drums, Mike Gorman on keyboards, Marcus Cliffe on bass, and Simon Currie on saxophone/ flute.

- A Look At Life And A Look Of Live The hits earned their place in pop history. From Poison Arrow to The Look Of Love, from All Of My Heart, and Be Near Me, to When Smokey Sings, ABC were the band that redefined glamour and cool. Led by the charismatic Martin Fry, they enjoyed Transatlantic success as The Lexicon of Love proved as artful as a Warhol silkscreen, and glossier than Marilyn’s lipstick. ABC’s The Lexicon of Love was a brilliantly distinctive debut album, fizzing with bright ideas, and unapologetically flamboyant. Frontman Martin Fry harked back to a golden era of luxe, as though Cole Porter had been re-imagined among the narrow streets of Sheffield. Little wonder his sleek, opulent, and beautiful debut retains the affection of listeners four decades on. With good reason, it has stood the test of time. And so has Martin Fry, who will bring an evening of stripped-back music and conversation to UK theatres in celebration. His intimate tour follows a sold-out tour of the UK, which included three sell out nights at London Palladium, and coincides with the publication of his autobiography. That’s the look, that’s the look… The Look of love.

- Featuring Peter Hook and the Light, The Wedding Present, The Farm and Spear of Destiny Scarborough Spa are delighted to announce a brand new event, “Interzone”. Featuring a host of bands, including The Wedding Present, Spear of Destiny, The Farm and headlined by Peter Hook and the Light. English rock group Peter Hook and the Light formed by bassist and vocalist Peter Hook, formerly of the influential post-punk bands Joy Division and New Order, will be headlining the Grand Hall stage next May. Back in May 2010, the band revisited Joy Division’s seminal album “Unknown Pleasures” for a commemorative charity concert and since then, have performed live the repertoire of Hooky's bands, New Order and Joy Division. Hooky's dedication to his back catalogue has seen him move through “Closer”, “Still”, “Movement”, “Power Corruption & Lies”, "Low Life", "Brotherhood", “Technique” and “Republic to arrive at this point and having toured extensively with the band, The Light have come to amass around 600 shows in the decade since their first concert. Leeds Pop Rockers, The Wedding Present, closely linked to the C86 scene, have charted a total of eighteen singles in the top 40 of the UK singles charts, including a historic run of twelve singles – one for each month – in 1992, which tied Elvis Presley’s record for most top 40 hits in a single year. From Liverpool, The Farm, are a British rock band formed back in 1989. Their first song to reach the top part of the UK singles chart was “Groovy Train”. In late November that year, they released their most memorable song, “All Together Now” which instantly became a hit and peaked at number three in the charts in December 1990. It was on the crest of this wave that their album Spartacus reached No. 1 in the UK the following year. It’s a recent return for the band who last year supported Cast on their August headline show at the Scarborough Spa. British post-punk band, Spear of Destiny, were formed in London, England back in 1982 by lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Kirk Brandon.

- "The consultant had told me he was confident I had throat cancer that had spread into the lymph glands. Joyfully, I held his hand, and looked up to the heavens like a South American footballer after scoring a goal. It was one of the happiest moments of my life." Join multi award-winning, BAFTA-nominated writer and comedian Mark Steel for his new tour ‘The Leopard in My House’. The topic? His battle with throat cancer. A battle he is winning (thankfully) and which only his rapier wit could fashion a comedy tour show out of. Cancer has done nothing to dull Mark's acute political observations or quash his "frankly bonkers" energy: you will laugh, you will cry, but you'll laugh again, and again, and again. The Leopard in My House is proof that this leftie, working-class, Radio 4 favourite truly deserves his place in the UK comedy pantheon. Mark Steel is best known for his critically-acclaimed BBC Radio 4 show Mark Steel’s in Town (now in its 13th series), as well as his hit podcast What The F*** Is Going On…?. He has presented the BAFTA-nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC Two, and is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News for You and BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz. He has also written several acclaimed books, including an adaptation of his critically acclaimed stand-up show Who Do I Think I Am? for Audible. Tickets on sale this Friday 11am.

- The new rescheduled date is Thursday 22nd May 2025 All tickets from the postponed October 2024 show remain valid. The UK’s biggest country music export The Shires have announced an intimate acoustic tour for 2024. The two of us tour will see Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes tour the length and breadth of the UK performing all their classic tracks. The Shires achievements speak for themselves: three consecutive UK Top 3 albums, four #1 UK Country albums, 100 million+ streams, two Gold-certified records, and countless sold-out headline shows, including filling the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. The Shires first broke through in 2014 with their single ‘Nashville Grey Skies’, a playful song about Britain needing its own country scene. And that’s something which they helped happen, starting with their 2015 debut Brave, which became the first ever Top 10 album by a UK country music artist. That success continued with a succession of hit albums: 2016’s My Universe, 2018’s Accidentally On Purpose, 2020’s Good Years and 2022’s 10 Year Plan. Their authenticity saw them embraced by the Nashville scene immediately, leading to two CMA Awards, touring highlights including C2C Festival and shows as guests to Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, The Corrs and more.

- Do you have questions after a breakup that were left unanswered? Well Lydia did, so she sent a questionnaire to all her ex-partners and made a show out of it. Closure? is a one act comedy performance following Lydia De La Murrãy on her journey of self-discovery through analysing all her past relationships…in great detail. Lydia is a cheesy music-loving, serial-dating, northern lass who's seeking closure after a particularly dysfunctional relationship that was swarmed with controversy and drama; so naturally it needed to be made into a show. If you like statistics, interpretive dance, and Daniel Bedingfield then you’ll love this show. Audiences will leave laughing, deciding if Lydia has actually gained closure and with some noughties classics stuck in their heads.

- The Corrs are Ireland’s first family of music, a multi-million selling sibling quartet who have conquered the world with a seamless blend of sleek pop rock, lush harmonies and Celtic folk trimmings. Comprising Andrea (lead vocals, piano, tin whistle), Sharon (violin, piano, vocals), Caroline (drums, piano, vocals) and Jim(guitar, keyboards, vocals), The Corrs have sold more than 40 million albums since their debut Forgiven, Not Forgotten in 1995, spawning a dozen classic hit singles. An enchanting mix of traditional Celtic music with a pop rock twist, The Corrs have written some of the biggest songs of the last three decades. Forgiven, Not Forgotten gave us the incredible title track, the exquisite Heaven Knows and of course, arguably one of the biggest contemporary songs of the modern era, Runaway. Their second album, Talk On Corners led with I Never Loved You Anyway, So Young and Only When I Sleep and is their biggest selling album to date. The Corrs 2005 album, Home, was dedicated to their mother, and focused on traditional Irish songs. The group took a hiatus after Home, to concentrate on raising families. By early 2015, they resumed writing sessions together and returned to action with huge global tours in a period that has seen them release two of their most mature albums, White Light (2015) and the T Bone Burnett produced Jupiter Calling (2017). The Corrs recent Arena tour saw sold out shows across the UK and Ireland and the group cannot wait to return to the stage in 2025, including what promises to be two incredible nights in Yorkshire

Gary will headline TK Maxx presents Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Friday 13th June. It is the second time Gary has headlined the UK’s largest open air gig arena after his sold-out show in 2018. As part of the group Take That he has won eight BRIT Awards and sold more than 45 million records. One of the band’s biggest hits, Back For Good, will turn 30 in March 2025. The track is still ranked as one of the UK’s favorite-ever pop songs having reached Number One on its release in March 1995 and remaining top of the charts for four consecutive weeks, going on to become the band’s biggest-selling song of the 1990s. This year, Gary hit the road with his fellow Take That bandmates for a huge world tour, playing sell-out shows and delighting their huge fanbase around the world with This Life On Tour, which saw them sell more than one million tickets. Their album of the same name, This Life, released in 2023, scored the band their 12th Number One album in the UK, spawning massive hits including Windows and This Life. The band also curated their very own four-day festival in Malta in October - The Greatest Weekend, where they performed their iconic album Everything Changes live, in its entirety for the first time since its release in 1993. Aside from his achievements with Take That, he has also co-written and produced music for other renowned artists including Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Elton John and Robbie Williams, and most recently, he wrote the song Running Wild for JIN from Korean super group, BTS. Earlier this month Gary toasted the third anniversary of his award-winning wine range, Gary Barlow Wines with the release of a five-part ITV series, Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour: South Africa, which saw the much-loved musician explore the other passions in his life of wine and travel. - While many of their electronic contemporaries have looked to technology to make their gigs a compelling experience, Basement Jaxx have always embraced a maximalist approach that would combine an dizzying and ever growing array of singers, MCs, musicians and eventually whole troupes of dancers to turn any stage into a life-affirming cavorting carnival of music. “After a few years DJing round the globe, it’ll be great to return to the live stage and the Live Show Experience” said Basement Jaxx’s Felix Buxton. “To connect to people with life affirming energy and give people a great time.” Starting in 1994 with a series of underground EPs on their own Atlantic Jaxx label, Felix and Simon Ratcliffe’s distinctive combination of house and garage with punk attitude, global influences and unforgettable tunes quickly developed a cult following that led to their 1999 first album Remedy with its breakthrough hits Red Alert, Rendez Vu and Jump & Shout. 2001’s follow up Rooty was even bigger and louder: Where’s Your Head At provided an evergreen anthem that still crosses all generations and genres. Right from the start Felix and Simon’s live experience was a showstopper that grew to the spectacular festival experience that led to headline slots at Glastonbury: first on The Other Stage, then by 2005, the same year they won the GRAMMY for best electronic album, Coachella, the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage and London’s Hyde Park. “It’s great our hits are still very much alive with younger generations,” said Felix, “so we connect across the age range – and it’ll be great to pop in a couple of bangers from our forthcoming album too.” The last 10 years have seen Basement Jaxx remain festival favourites but headlining behind the decks rather than at the front of the stage – but the time is now right to bring back the full eye-popping technicolour experience and as Felix puts it: “It feels like 2025 is the beginning of a new era for many and I think that’s probably true for Basement Jaxx too” Register for pre-sale below

- Hannah – The Soldier Diaries and the amazing Zoe Wright are back in this new production for June 2025 at the Scarborough Spa Theatre. Following a fantastic debut run in April 2024, the Hannah story has evolved, and this updated version with a strap line ‘The Missing Pages’ returns to the Scarborough Spa in June 2025. The original stage version’s story concentrated very much on Hannah a young hairdresser and students relationship with Jack a Lance Corporal in the British Army. Whilst this new version initially also follows that narrative, this new production of Hannah fills in 'The Missing Pages' and tells the story of her relationship with Jack’s brother Alex, who not only looks out for her whilst Jack is away fighting in the Afghan War, he also struggles desperately not to fall in love with her. Featuring songs from the original show we have added eleven brand new songs which we are sure your gonna love. With its new content, Hannah – The Soldier Diaries ‘The Missing Pages’ will appeal to both those who have loved the original version and those new to Hannah. We look forward to seeing you for this wonderful production once again Made & Set in Scarborough. - The Pine Hill Haints - live music

- The Pine Hill Haints made such a great impression at Filey Americana Festival last year we had no hesitation in inviting them to play at the OPO with Yorkshire’s own Serious Sam Barrett opening up and joining them on stage. Not many bands can claim that they were formed in a cemetery. But it was a perfect and appropriately poetic setting for the birth of roots music trailblazers The Pine Hill Haints. Just to address the obvious, the word “haint,” of archaic English origin, means to haunt or to inhabit aggressively. And with a medium-like connection, The Haints have spent the last two decades resurrecting all kinds of music that has passed out of the mainstream – in a style they call “Alabama Ghost Country.” “Twenty-five years ago, there was a group of us in Auburn and we were all into roots music,” recalls front man Jamie Barrier of their beginnings. “Meanwhile, me and my roommates had started a skateboard company. Whenever the police would come after us, everybody would run in a different direction, so they’d have to choose which of the eight they were going to chase. But every skater knew to meet up right beside my apartment, which was next to the Pine Hill Cemetery. I could open a window and walk out into the cemetery. It got to where we’d go into the cemetery with acoustic instruments and just jam. “In some ways, we preceded the whole roots movement,” he continues. “But in other ways, nobody preceded anything. I guess where we were coming from has a lot more teeth for me than what’s happening now. People are almost afraid to say they love country without trying to up the rock side. But I think about the Carter Family just playing “You Are My Sunshine.” The purity and emotion of that. It’s almost like the hardest angle to find in country music today, so we wanted to really go there.” On the band’s latest long-player, The Song Companion of a Lonestar Cowboy, they go there and to other colorful places on the Americana and Appalachian trail. The fifteen song sequence kicks off with “Fall Asleep” and “Back to Alabama,” a fiery pair of rockabilly-meets-Irish-jig rave-ups, then winds through standout tracks like the Bo Diddley-grooved “Pretty Thing,” a pounding tom-tom and fiddle take on the traditional “John Henry” and the catchy, cajun-flavored squeezebox pop of “Lone Star Kid.” There are excursions into Sun Records-style country (“Midnight Mayor” and “Louise”) and swampy blues (the saw-singing “Wade in the Water” and “Downtown Blues,” which features guest J.D. Wilkes on harmonica). Throughout, Barrier’s strong tenor voice rings familiar and friendly, with deep echoes of everything from John Lee Hooker to Buddy Holly to Johnny Cash. And the band plays with a sense of abandon that comes from thousands of gigs behind them. It all sounds deceptively simple, but anyone who plays music knows better. The Haints do something very few roots bands can, which is to transcend influences and sculpt age-old sounds into soul music for our time.

- On 14 July 1955, an ambitious young theatrical pioneer called Stephen Joseph opened a revolutionary new theatre… on the first floor of Scarborough Library. The Library Theatre was the first in-the-round theatre in the UK in modern times – it’s since been replicated worldwide. Theatregoers in Scarborough and beyond embraced the new format, and the ‘temporary’ Library Theatre hosted performances until 1976, when it moved to another – also ‘temporary’! – home in a former school at the town’s Westwood. That ran until 1996, when we found our final home in the former Odeon Cinema. The Stephen Joseph Theatre is now a cultural beacon on the Yorkshire coast, attracting audiences from across the globe. We’ll be celebrating our 70 years in style on Sunday 13 July 2025, with, amongst other things, a cornucopia of extracts from some of our favourite plays from those seven decades, performed script-in-hand by some of our favourite actors – we hope you can join us! Keep coming back here for more information as our plans develop. Tickets are £20 but we have a limited number of VIP tickets available for £70 - these include: A souvenir programme Entry to the post-show gala Post-show buffet including a glass of prosecco To book VIP tickets please contact us directly by calling our Box Office on 01723 370541 or emailing tickets@sjt.uk.com. This will ensure we can book your preferred seats. The SJT is a Registered Charity (253606). All money raised will go towards our New Work Fund, helping us put brand new work on our stages and nurture new talent.

- Whitby District Lion’s Club is very excited to announce that The Whitby Beer Festival is a back for 2024! The charity beer festival is held in aid of Whitby & District Lion’s Club. This year the festival is celebrating its 13th year and the club intends to celebrate the growing reputation of the festival of serving over 30 of the very best artisan ales, boutique beers and scrumptious ciders from award-winning local and regional independent brewers and micro-breweries. Please see the list of beers and ciders we served at our 2023 festival, at the bottom of this page. The festival as always is being held at the Whitby Mission & Seafarers Centre, Haggersgate in Whitby which is ideally located in the centre of the town. The festival opens its doors from Thursday 25th July until Sunday 28th July. The opening times are from 12 Noon until 10 PM Thursday to Saturday and 12 Noon until 4 PM on Sunday. Entrance tickets cost just £5 which includes a commemorative festival tankard, which is yours to keep as a souvenir and one beer token (for one ½ pint measures). Beer tickets can then be purchased throughout the festival. Last year the festival raised an amazing £5,000.00 for Whitby Lion’s with 100% of this been donated to many local Whitby charities that the club supports throughout the year. Whitby Lion’s is part of Lions International which is the biggest voluntary charity network in the world with over 1.7 million members. All the money we raise from the festival and throughout the year from our other events is kept and spent locally. The club provides vital funding which can be difficult to access for small independent charities that we support. We also support many personal good causes, helping people with disability, learning or health needs. As a club, we also run our Disability Scooter Scheme which hires out mobility scooters (free of charge) to anyone who has difficulty getting out and about. The total raised last year included the one-off purchase of some beer barrel cooling jackets, these ensure our beers are cool enough to serve throughout the festival. Therefore, the actual amount raised would have been higher. This purchase secures the long term future of the festival to be self sufficient and deliver a better customer experience. The festival boasts an excellent range of delicious traditional hand-crafted real ales ranging from pale ales, IPA’s, bitters, blonds, golden, dark milds to porters which have all been brewed in small batches using locally sourced ingredients. All our real ales are served from traditional draught casks, this gives our real ales a fresher authentic taste. You will not find any mass-produced carbonated beer here. We also have an exceptional range of real ciders to enjoy from traditional scrumpy, dry, sweet or to the ever popular fruity ciders such as mango and strawberry. All our ciders have been made from real apples and fruit by dedicated small producers, that use a natural production method of making deliciously mellow, aromatic or sweet great tasting ciders. Our festival warmly welcomes anyone who wants to sample our great produce from tourists, day-trippers, evening goers and real ale enthusiasts. Families are very welcome as soft drinks are available for children and all we ask is for children to be supervised by an adult. Every year the festival is friendly and has a relaxed atmosphere, especially when the sun is out, as we have outside seating, which is a great way to bring along some friends, family or just by yourself and enjoy our real ale and ciders. The Whitby Mission Café which is located just next to the hall where the festival is been held, the café serves homemade food all day which will brilliantly complement your real ale or cider. Bar snacks are also available throughout the festival at the bar. On behalf of Whitby & District Lions, we thank you for your past and continued support and we look forward to seeing you there, Cheers! Event Information Entry Fee – £5.00 (Includes 1 beer token and a commemorative glass tankard). Beer sold in 1/2 pint measures only. - One of the greatest British comedies ever written, Noises Off is a hilarious and heartfelt tribute to the unpredictability of life in the theatre. Called “the funniest farce ever written”, Noises Off follows the on and off-stage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, Nothing On. Across three acts we witness: the shambolic final rehearsals, a disastrous matinee seen entirely from backstage and their brilliantly catastrophic final performance. We’re delighted to present the first ever in the round production of Michael Frayn’s comedy masterpiece.

- It’s the show night out not to be missed – wowing crowds in Blackpool since 2014, and now touring the country – OH WHAT A NITE! is a different style of tribute show to any other that you will have seen or heard of before. Matt Andrew leads our vocal quartet as our tribute to Frankie Valli – telling the story of the band and how they formed the group which took them to the dizzy heights of television appearances, fame and fortune… all performed alongside an amazing trio of vocal talent – Johnny, Michael and Toby who take the roles of Nick Massey, Bob Guadio and Tommy Devito Comedy host Leye D Johns can’t be kept away from the stage for too long either, bringing a light hearted flavour to proceedings and ensuring the crowd leave with a big smile on their face. Our Viva showgirls complete the cast line-up – bringing the moves of the 60s and 70s to the stage as well as backing vocals, and solo numbers of their own bringing the era back to life! The show also has a way of bringing current hits to life too, with that same Doo Wop style – again making OH WHAT A NITE! different to any tribute show you’ll ever see! Stunning costumes, choreography, production and more – all to take you back to the era when hit song, after hit song had ‘The Four Seasons’ famous around the World. Don’t just take our word for it – see what audiences are saying on Facebook for OH WHAT A NITE!

- Gerald recently lost his wife of many years. Amy was the light of his life, almost heaven-sent. It’s tricky thinking about life without her but he’s trying his best to put a brave face on things, accepting help from fussy neighbours and muddling along as best he can. Then a mysterious stranger turns up at Amy’s wake. He seems like a nice enough chap, washing the dishes and offering to do a shop for Gerald, but is he all that he appears? Alan Ayckbourn’s 91st play digs deep into one of life’s greatest mysteries – what makes someone a good person? And in this day and age, can you ever really be sure...?

- It's All Relative is an evening of Alan Ayckbourn in two halves! In the first half Alan Ayckbourn’s archivist Simon Murgatroyd M.A. explores the creation of Relatively Speaking on its 60th anniversary (8th July 1965). In the wake of one of his biggest West End failures, Alan Ayckbourn would write his breakout West End hit and one of his most famous plays. We've assembled a group of actors with years of Ayckbourn experience. The second half of the evening is your chance to hear stories gathered from behind the scenes on some of Alan Ayckbourn's 90 plays. We haven't confirmed casting yet but there will be plenty of familiar faces. Actors, Audiences & Ayckbourn It's All Relative is part of a special fundraising weekend with our Director Emeritus Alan Ayckbourn. The fundraising weekend will include a rehearsed reading of Men, Meals & Me a never before heard play. Full details here. The fundraising weekend, Actors, Audiences & Ayckbourn (26-28 September 2025), will include a rehearsed reading of a never-before-heard play: Men, Meals & Me. The reading is yet to be cast, but expect to see a few familiar faces. You can buy tickets to each event individually or get exclusive benefits with the following VIP packages as part of the fundraiser

- When life gives Rhod lemons… In his last show ‘The Book of John’, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour… But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs...with a little help from an old adversary. “DARKLY HILARIOUS. IT’S GOOD TO HAVE HIM BACK” Times rhodgilbertcomedian.com
