  • What's in a name? It's something you've got no control over really, unless you choose it yourself - and Beauty definitely DIDN'T choose hers! I mean, imagine being called Beauty. Pressure or what? Judging on appearance is so rude! Especially when everyone in the Kingdom says that her elder sisters are both, well, beautiful. Beauty's never been into all that. She likes her scruffy playing out clothes, she likes climbing trees, eating sausages, going to market with her Dad, loves Christmas and adores adventures. Which is handy... Because when her Dad gets lost one night and strays into the grounds of an unusual castle, he is captured by something. Something big. And scary. And beastly. And Beauty isn't going to wait around for a rescue party. Oh no. She's off to the castle to find out what this something is... and sort it out! This Christmas, the team behind Cinderella, Jack & the Beanstalk and The Snow Queen are back and up to their old tricks again. Expect songs, silliness, thrills, spills and more festive cheer than you can shake a sausage on a stick at! Praise for previous Christmas shows: ★★★★★ “Sparkling” Northern Soul ★★★★★ “Inspired” The Reviews Hub Audience reactions to previous Christmas shows: “Brimming with energy, fun and originality. • Designed by Steve Wintercoft Produced by ARCADE supported by Scarborough Library Funded by Arts Council England, Yorkshire Coast Bid and North Yorkshire Council Back for its third year, popular immersive installation, Grue, by Wintercroft, returns in a new home! A magical world, built by the community and made entirely out of recycled and repurposed materials. This year Grue can be reached through a magical door which can only be accessed on the top floor of Scarborough Library. Grue invites you to step into a fantastical world and explore a series of enchanting landscapes. Travel through dense forest and across icy regions on an important mission, discovering forgotten creatures both big and small. With your help, this wondrous world can be documented once and for all and a lost librarian can find the final chapter of their book, reclaim their story and place it on the library shelves for good. This year Grue has live actors, but don’t worry - nothing scary or gory here, no surprises or jump scares! Grue is free or Pay What You Can to visit and provides a welcoming wintery experience for all the family. There are hot drinks and snacks available on site. Grue is designed by Scarborough artist, Steve Wintercroft - who has worked with Sir Paul McCartney, Bjork and Tracey Emin, and produced by local arts charity ARCADE. • A fascinating, atmospheric exhibition of found, natural objects by local artist Paul Elsam. Paul writes: "The coastline here in North Yorkshire is dynamic, offering fresh gifts with each violent new tide. It’s a landscape of crumbling cliffs, giant rocks, flash-flood mud slides, fossils, tidal pools - and strange driftwood. I’ve always been a collector, and for a while fossils were the big draw. Driftwood seemed just that: sea-dumped tree fragments gnawed by nature, and often too-much-softened by the sea. But, bringing pieces home to dry and ‘work’ them, I could see the sea’s dynamism within each emerging shape. I began developing my own cyclical process of cleaning, drying, rough-sculpting and fine-working - respecting, always, the emerging abstract shape within each piece (some likely thousands of years old). This exhibition marks the first time any of the work has been seen in public. So what will you experience when you visit? It’s there in the title ‘Drift/Lit’: quirky worked driftwood, lit to throw shapes and shadows that will fire your imagination. See you there! Paul Elsam"

  • Critically acclaimed Nottingham born singer-songwriter Jake Bugg will be performing in the Spa Grand Hall this December. It’s over 10 years since a two-fingered Bugg burst onto the scene with his eponymous debut, one that topped the UK album charts and saw the then 18-year-old from Nottingham fêted as the next Bob Dylan. Since then, Jake has gone on to have top selling albums and countless headline live performances across the world. His 5th studio album, ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’ was released in 2021, which marked a bold and exciting new chapter for Jake Bugg, filled with catchy guitar hooks, rhythmic base lines & anthemic choruses.

  • “SANTAAAAA! I KNOW HIM!” Based on the beloved holiday film, this hilarious musical comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. For the first time, this Broadway and West End smash is coming to Scarborough, presented by the company that brought you The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Addams Family. This modern-day holiday classic I sure to make everyone embrace their inner elf. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear. If that wasn’t enough…. • The ever-popular Hammonds Band returns to the Stephen Joseph Theatre in January for a fabulous afternoon of the best of brass music. The award-winning band is one of the country’s premiere brass ensembles. It was founded in 1855 by Sir Titus Salt as an amenity for the workers at his recently opened mill. The band later had a long association with Hammonds Sauce Works under the baton of the legendary Geoffrey Whitham. It is from these two parts of its past that it derives its current name, Hammonds Band. Under the direction of Morgan Griffiths, Hammonds Band is now one of the country’s finest brass bands, performing in venues across the world. Tickets to the Hammonds Band concert, which is at 3pm on Sunday 7 January, are available from the Box Office on 01723 370541 and online.

  • Kiss the Hollywood happy ending goodbye! As SHE Likes It is inspired by the story of #MeToo pioneer Patricia Douglas. It’s been nearly 100 years since dancer and film extra Patricia was lured to a studio party under the guise of a casting call, in what was perhaps the biggest, best-suppressed scandal in Hollywood history. Written by Chloe Wade and supported by Olivier Award Winning Playwright, Morgan Lloyd Malcolm - Emilia (The Globe), Obsession (Netflix) - As SHE Likes It is a peek behind the sepia cigarette smoke and passionate embraces of Old Hollywood, as seen through the eyes of its archetypes. Through a fusion of live theatre and filmed footage, it asks: How much has changed between the Hollywood of yesteryear and now? Age guidance: 13+ With integrated audio description and creative captions. As SHE Likes It is supported by SOLACE Women's Aid. • Spend an evening in the extraordinary company of Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE - ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’ - as he goes beyond his record-breaking achievements to explore the man behind the myth. Sir Ranulph has circumnavigated the surface of the globe from pole to pole, became the first person to cross the Arctic and Antarctica on foot, broken countless world records of endurance, and discovered the Lost City of Ubar in Arabia. Despite his infamous fear of heights, he is the oldest Briton to summit Everest, achieved on his third attempt. But these extraordinary accomplishments have come at a cost: he has lost half his fingers to frostbite, almost died countless times, and suffered a heart attack and double bypass only three months before he completed seven consecutive marathons in seven days on seven continents. Now, he has a new challenge. Live on stage, Sir Ranulph will share stories from his legendary exploits and adventures, telling untold tales of the world’s most extraordinary feats of daring and exploration. Taking us from his magical and mischievous childhood, through school misdemeanours, to his time in the military and beyond, Ran will also reveal for the first time his own personal heroes and the incredible lessons he learnt from them which have informed his hazardous profession. Delivered in his own inimitable fashion and accompanied by stunning, never-before-seen images and home videos, this show guarantees to leave you entertained and inspired to seek out your own life adventures.

My story is told though stand up and some sit down, a trip back to my council estate in South London, from my very first lyrical expression to the dressing rooms of this show. My new songs written with Boo Hewerdine tell a story of celebration, 25 years writing lyrics and playing on stages big and small. A journey I look back on with great fondness and gratitude. I cant wait to climb back on stage and perform, although I have been shy in the past I now find myself feasting on the here and now deep within the shell-like of your ear. I will be joined on stage by Melvin Duffy on his peddle steel and together we will deliver an evening of warm and I hope funny stories. Melvins playing is outstanding and I feel so lucky to have him as my sideman, he cries over the songs and makes them sound always amazing. 'Not Only But Also' is not just a look back on 50 lyrical years, it's a journey that asks, What Happened? What happened to all those years and mates I grew up with before I formed a band. I hope you enjoy this new show for 2024.”

From Brid Spa to Stoke, from Scarborough to the Tower Ballroom, our young soulies are determined to keep the faith. The pubs are closing, hospitality has gone, and strikes are everywhere; but when you’re out on the floor… Spread the talc, grab your loafers and join our trio for a weekender! It is her great love for the music of Fauré that formed the basis of this programme choice. We begin with Lili Boulanger’s rapturous orchestral work, D’un Matin du Printemps, followed by Gabriel Fauré’s sublime Pavane. We continue with John Foulds’s orchestral showpiece, the evocative April - in England. We are delighted to welcome back Holly Clark to play Henri Tomasi’s legendary and highly virtuosic Trumpet Concerto. Musical styles range from film score to impressionism, hints of Aaron Copland to jazz. We close our concert with two orchestral and audience favourites - Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande suite and Ravel’s Boléro. These works are the epitome of sumptuous French music and will leave us all wanting more!

This opera and ballet theatre has a long-standing heritage of top-quality opera productions, and we are excited to bring it back to the UK in our 2024 Opera Season. La Bohème, is Puccini’s passionate story of love at first sight set in 19th century Paris, in Bohemian district where students and upcoming artists live. La Bohème is a love story between Mimi and Rodolfo at the first sign. Rodolfo, the poet and his friends live their lives in freedom, independence but at a price of, financial struggle. One day, Rodolpho was in love with his fragile neighbour Mimi, and live takes a turn for the better. But poverty and Mimi’s ill health, confront the couple with a harsh reality. They soon realise that love cannot conquer all. In, La Bohème, Puccini not only tells a tragic story, but also portrays the subculture of Bohemians in 19th century Paris. Their great desire for freedom and independence at any cost. At the time of the premier in 1896, this opera gave a new outlook on life through everyday subject matter. “Always top-quality productions from this producer”. Stage Talk Magazine

Tender, funny and defiantly hopeful, The Light House is a real life story of falling in love and staying in love, even when the lights go out and you're lost in the dark. It's a love letter to life. Join the emergency response as we dance in the kitchen, sing in the streets and try to turn the lights back on. It gets lonely, muddling through these days and nights. So why don’t we do it together? From the voices of ramblers and campaigners, to the songs and poetry inspired by past and current struggles, Behold Ye Ramblers is a new play about The Clarion newspaper and the organisations formed by its readership, including famous rambling club, The Sheffield Clarion Ramblers. Along with the Clarion Cyclists, these early Edwardian pioneers promoted healthy outdoor pursuits, organising expeditions across open moors and mountains whilst campaigning for the right to roam, bringing them into conflict with landowners’ hunting and shooting activities and laws that prioritised private property over the wellbeing of others. • Wildly satirical, visually stunning and deeply moving, it’s the musical that revolutionised modern theatre; an exhilarating, no-holds-barred assault on the military incompetence and inconceivable disregard for human life the First World War has come to represent. Brimming with timeless songs, razor-sharp satire and high jinks, Oh What A Lovely War is a hilarious, heart-breaking snapshot of life for those caught in the crossfire of conflict, a unanimous voice from the trenches and a timely warning from the theatre of war itself. Now, more than ever, it holds a mirror up to the world and speaks to us all. “Magnificent... Extraordinary... As haunting as it is harrowing... Astonishing power... • BRAHMS FOGG BOULANGER GRANT STILL Saturday 11th May 2024 - 7.15pm Methodist Central Hall, Queen Street YO11 1HQ (click for venue information) Conductor Shaun Matthew Bassoon Linton Stephens Brahms - Academic Festival Overture Fogg - Bassoon Concerto Boulanger - D'un Soir Triste Grant Still - Symphony No.4, 'Autochthonous' (UK première) Our concert begins with Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture. Composed in 1880 and dedicated to the University of Breslau, Brahms conjures up less of a sense of the academic student but more of the comradeship in the student world. We are proud to welcome Linton Stephens to perform the Bassoon Concerto by English composer, Eric Fogg. Written in 1931, it is an exciting, three movement work with the most glorious Chaconne as its 2nd movement. The outer movements display all the fun, cheekiness and virtuosic nature of the bassoon. We continue with one of Lili Boulanger’s final works, D’un Soir Triste. This short but powerful piece displays the conflict of a terminally ill Lili Boulanger confronting her own mortality. We close our concert with the UK première of William Grant Still’s Symphony no. 4, ‘Autochthonous’. Still’s original programme note states that the symphony ‘speaks of the fusion of musical cultures in North America.’ Join us for this amazing work, full of melody and the human spirit.

This year he tries to celebrate his Jubilee but ends up taking a deep dive into himself, throwing up questions about class, privilege and his adoption. • Renowned as the original and very best Bee Gees tribute show, and THE ONLY Bee Gees tribute show that has actually performed with the original Bee Gees! In 1997 Gary & Darren from Jive Talkin' performed LIVE on HEART FM with THE BEE GEES and received great compliments from both Maurice and Barry Gibb. As with the original Bee Gees, Jive Talkin' is very much a family affair, with brothers Gary and Darren Simmons taking the roles of Barry and Maurice Gibb, with Darren's son Jack joining the group in 2014 and taking on the role of Robin Gibb. The guys are supported musically by a four piece band with Lead Guitar, Violin, Cello and Drums, to ensure that every note in every song is just right! For a truly amazing experience and an opportunity to hear all the great Bee Gees hits; Tragedy, Night Fever, Massachusetts, Stayin Alive, Jive Talkin, etc, in a 2 hour explosion of music and vocal harmony, this is a night not to be missed!.

  • Sir Tom continues to sustain his popularity around the world, captivating audiences with his timeless discography of hit songs and enduring talent and charisma. With a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest singers and recording artists of all time, selling more than 100 million records and continuing as an esteemed and influential figure in the music industry. At the age of 83, Sir Tom has received some of the best reviews of his career for his most recent Ethan Johns-produced albums “Surrounded By Time”, "Long Lost Suitcase," "Spirit In The Room," and "Praise & Blame." Critics praised both the recorded material and his performances, highlighting his undeniable and unique talent in both the studio and on stage. Sir Tom’s career kicked off in the early 1960s when he signed with Decca Records in London. He had a string of hit songs including "It's Not Unusual," "What's New Pussycat?" "Delilah," and "Green, Green Grass of Home" which sat alongside his hugely popular 1969-1971 cross-continental TV show, "This is Tom Jones". He has always had a fundamental interest in a wide range of music, leading him to work with dozens of iconic collaborators over the years, ranging from Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin to Van Morrison, Dolly Parton, Ed Sheeran, and many more. Away from the stage, Sir Tom’s career has been filled with numerous honours and accolades, including a deeply cherished knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2006, multiple BRIT Awards, a Silver Clef Award, the prestigious Music Industry Trusts Award and a Hitmaker Award from the US Songwriters Hall of Fame. Along with his yearly touring, he has continued to be active in the industry as a longstanding coach on the TV show The Voice UK. His recent autobiography "Over The Top And Back" was a rollicking best-seller, and his 2021 album release “Surrounded By Time” made him the oldest male to claim a Number 1 spot on the UK Official Albums Chart with an album of new material, overtaking Bob Dylan. Sir Tom has cemented his place in music history as one of the most successful artists of all time, traversing musical eras and genres, cutting across class divides, and appealing to all genders and ages, mainstream and cutting edge. First released in 1998, the album became one of the defining records of the 1990s, irrespective of genre. Swinging from hip-hop, to reggae and jangle pop, with this record Norman Cook broke stylistic ground and delivered a wildly original album, filled with imagination, huge hooks and infectious beats. The album that spawned era-defining singles Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, Praise You and Right Here Right Nowwas bigger than just a dance album, You've Come a Long Way, Baby was a genuine phenomenon, enjoying huge critical and commercial success; reaching Number One in the UK album charts, it contains four UK Top 10 singles, and earned Norman a BRIT Award for best producer and two further nominations (Male Solo Artist and British Single) along the way. The 25th anniversary reissue album has been remastered at half speed at Abbey Road Studios for the best available audio quality possible and is available to buy here. We open with Franz Schubert’s haunting Unfinished Symphony (No.8) in B minor. The symphony occupied Schubert for many years, only to be abandoned and left unfinished. This work has been a mainstay of the repertoire since its première in 1865. We welcome back East Yorkshire local and virtuoso cellist, Christina Waldock. Christina delighted audiences with her warm, introspective interpretation of the Dvořák Cello Concerto. Tonight, Christina will perform Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor - a work that needs no introduction. We close our season with one of our Musical Director’s favourite composers, Carl Nielsen, and his Symphony No.1 in G minor. A direct contemporary of Jean Sibelius, Nielsen’s symphonies are at the forefront of 20th Century symphonic development. Join us for this joyous close to our 2023/2024 season.

  • Jack’s planning a big party for his wife’s birthday. He’s pulling out all the stops and has booked a touring theatre company to perform in the main hall of the family home. The only problem is that Jack is getting a bit forgetful in his old age and can’t remember all the details of the booking… The Homelight Theatre Company is on its knees. They desperately need a well-paid gig and Jack’s booking is very well paid. Pinning him down on the details has been tricky and something doesn’t feel quite right. Alan Ayckbourn’s 90th play is a celebration of theatre, a delightfully dark farce lifting the lid on the performances we act out on a daily basis. Mr A's Amazing Days: September will also bring a special fundraising event with our Director Emeritus Alan Ayckbourn. Mr A’s Amazing Days (13 to 15 September 2024) will include a rehearsed reading of one of several plays the renowned writer penned during lockdown, as well as other treats for Ayckbourn fans – watch this space for more information coming soon! Preview: On Thursday 5 September ticket prices are capped at £16 for all seats Socially distanced performance: Wednesday 11 September, 7.30pm

  • China Crisis, emerged in 1981 from their native Kirkby as the song writing duo of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist / vocalist Eddie Lundon, who over the years have been accompanied by a gifted and creative but ever-mutable group of musicians both on stage and in their recordings. Citing influences as varied as Davie Bowie, Stevie Wonder and Eric Satie, it’s not entirely surprising that their sound was distinctive amongst their peers, often combining elements of jazz, reggae, country and other styles with their own unique melodies and harmonies. The band have just released their “40th Anniversary: Live from the Liverpool Philharmonic”, a lovingly produced live concert video from their inaugural 40th Anniversary show which features songs from every one of their albums (some never performed live), recorded in their hometown with an all-star 16-piece China Crisis band. With a combination of truly engaging music, a good bit of Scouse humour, and the clear kinship the band have with their fans, any China Crisis show is one you leave happier for having been part of. Their live performances are truly a must-see.

  • A prodigious kid who grew up on the poetry of Eliot and Lawrence, the prose of Steinbeck, Woolf, and Hemingway, and the music of Bob Dylan, Steve Harley soon realised his life would be preoccupied with words and music. He met The Rolling Stones as a kid, and the die was cast. After working as a newspaper reporter, he switched to rock’n’roll, enjoying huge success with Cockney Rebel and such hits as Sebastian and the iconic Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me). Acting off-Broadway and in London, he recorded the title track of The Phantom Of The Opera with Sarah Brightman, while also finding time to write for Rod Stewart, among others, before playing Glastonbury Festival three times, the Isle of Wight festival and receiving numerous awards. And now, it’s time to reflect. Come Up And See Me… And Other Stories, will feature music and stories, as Steve tells stories about his career, while playing acoustic versions of the biggest hits. Steve will be accompanied by long-standing band member Barry Wickens.

  • Next Christmas we're revisiting another classic. The story of a poor boy from a distant land, tricked by a sorcerer into retrieving a remarkable lamp from a magical cave... we all know this one. Or do we...? Because what if that cave was more magical than Aladdin or the sorcerer had ever imagined? What if the cave he wandered into isn’t the cave he wanders out of? What if, in fact, Aladdin finds himself outside Hairy Bob’s cave on a cold winter’s night? A wind ravaged Marine Drive is no place for a lad in threadbare clothes and sandals. He'll need to get from Scarbosia (oh yes) back to his home, but it’ll take more than a genie's three wishes - especially when he's blown the first two on hot chocolate and a Parka! From the team who brought you Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast expect a brand new adventure packed with silliness, thrills, spills, singalongs and fantastical family fun. Performance times: 11am/1pm/3pm/6pm/7pm Preview: On Friday 29 November ticket prices are capped at £16 for all seats Socially distanced performance: Monday 2 December, 7pm Bringing the family? • He’s the wild man of rock who became a national treasure. Happy Mondays and Black Grape frontman Shaun Ryder is hitting the road for a new, spoken word tour. The star of more-TV-shows-than-anyone-has-a-right-to-feature-on – including Celebrity Goggle-Box, and I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, among many others – redefined the sex’n’drugs’n’rock’n’roll lifestyle during the halcyon age of Madchester. He’s touring in support of his new book: Happy Mondays - and Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays. Fans can look forward to a carnival of excess, wild tales, and improbable truths, as they enjoy the talents of a unique rock'n'roll star dubbed Britpop's answer to WB Yeats. Strap yourselves in and say Hallelujah for Shaun.

  • When life gives Rhod lemons… In his last show ‘The Book of John’, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour… But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs...with a little help from an old adversary. “DARKLY HILARIOUS. IT’S GOOD TO HAVE HIM BACK” Times rhodgilbertcomedian.com
