A journey which started with a non-consensual customer service shift outside TK MAXX in Macclesfield has lead him around the world and directly into the orbit of the world’s biggest sporting figures. He’s confused Premiership footballers, been threatened by heavyweight boxers and improved the vocabulary of Formula 1 legends. In this show Troy examines his unlikely genesis and explores exactly why a well-dressed man simply being nice to people has caused such a kerfuffle ‘…genius character comedy’ (The Wee Review)

The household name with his signature acerbic wit and riotous storytelling, Tom is the host of The Apprentice: You’re Fired and co-hosts Cooking With The Stars, Like Minded Friends and he is also a regular on Bake Off: An Extra Slice and There’s Something About Movies. Tom's last tour sold over fifty-thousand tickets including his sell out show at The London Palladium where he recorded his special. “Sharp badinage, sympathetic personal material and – not least – his abundant skills as a raconteur and host.” The Guardian “a riotous rollercoaster of a set from a skilful stand-up perched on the cusp of major fame" The Evening Standard “A neatly judged mix of realism and ripe exaggeration delivered at a frantically camp pace." Here's a message from Daniel Kitson: "This is quite undignified, but I trod on the ball at football, went flying and did something to my rib/chest/side/back that makes it temporarily impossible to waddle about shouting at audiences. I'm very sorry for the faff, but it's currently quite painful to breathe deeply, let alone bellow profanities at the paying public for eighty minutes. I really hope you can come to the rearranged dates and you've been able to alter/cancel any travel/accommodation plans. Sorry again. • 'Psychic’ performances are everywhere these days – with people who claim the ability to communicate with the dead performing everywhere from theatres, to home visits, and on television. What, however, for those who are interested in the idea of these ‘psychic’ shows, but are skeptics? Or would like to see how much ‘psychic’ phenomena can easily be faked? That is why magician, escapologist and comedy performer Greg Chapman created his ‘The Non-Psychic ‘Psychic’ Show’, and is very excited to be coming to the Burniston & Cloughton Village Hall with the show! Using the full range of magic, escapology, mentalism and other performance skills, he takes the audience through a ninety-minute exploration of fraudulent mediums, from the Victorian Seances to modern psychic readings, but all clearly presented as trickery – and without any attempt or illusion of talking to people’s “dead relatives’”. This show is fun and thought-provoking. Although the show takes no stand on whether it is actually possible to communicate with the dead, it shows how the appearance of such communications can be made through trickery, in a way that is entertaining, interesting, and at times downright funny!

  • Cask Inn, Cambridge Terrace, Scarborough, YO11 2LQ
  • https://www.scarborough.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/IMG_6672.jpeg
  • Clark Tracey BEM is one of THE names in British jazz. The son of legendary jazz pianist Stan Tracey OBE CBE, Clark started playing drums at 13 and turned professional 4 years later joining his fathers ensembles for the next 35 years until Stan's death in 2013. His own ensembles have included UK jazz luminaries such as Django Bates and lain Bellamy (with whom he formed his first group) and since then his bands have featured Julian Arguelles, Guy Barker, Dave O'Higgins, Zoe Rahman, and Kit Downes, to name just a few. His latest quintet features Alex Clarke, Emily Masser, Graham Harvey and James Owston and will be performing at Scarborough Jazz in the evening of 1st May. As a freelance drummer Clark has had 40 years' experience playing alongside some of the most important artists in jazz at home and abroad. Some of the most significant unions with American artists have been with Johnny Griffin, Pharaoh Sanders, John Hicks, George Cables, Bud Shank, Red Rodney, and Scott Hamilton. British artists include names such as Ronnie Scott, John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Kenny Wheeler, Alan Barnes and Tommy Smith. And if you think you recognise that face... yes it's Clark playing drums in the 1999 movie 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. He has recorded over 100 albums (15 as a leader) and performed in over 50 countries. He has been awarded 'Best Drums' title six times in the British Jazz Awards (most recently in 2018) and Ronnie Scott's Award for 'Best Drums' in 2007. He has endorsements with Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Remo Drumheads and Cambridge Drums. In this masterclass Clark will be sharing stories from his career as a drummer and composer, talking about the jazz legends that have influenced him, and giving practical insights into drumming techniques. There'll be lots of opportunity to ask questions and fellow drummers of all abilities are encouraged to bring their sticks and receive some 1-2-1 advice, tips and tricks from a genuine drum hero. Whether you're a drummer yourself, a fellow musician, a fan of jazz music, or just enjoy hearing a musician at the top of their game talk about a life in music, this will be a treat. Admission is free although donations are strongly encouraged (pay what you can afford) - these will pay for Clark's time. If you're thinking of travelling and staying for the evening's performance... The Cask Inn serves a wide range of food (and good beer!) upstairs and there's plenty of on street parking. It's also just 5 minutes walk from the Esplanade so you can also have a wander and take in some sea air before the gig - doors at 7:45pm. Advance tickets for the quintet evening performance are recommended and available via email or text/phone: bobwalker4@btinternet.com / 07703 434796.

  • BRAHMS FOGG BOULANGER GRANT STILL Saturday 11th May 2024 - 7.15pm Methodist Central Hall, Queen Street YO11 1HQ (click for venue information) Conductor Shaun Matthew Bassoon Linton Stephens Brahms - Academic Festival Overture Fogg - Bassoon Concerto Boulanger - D'un Soir Triste Grant Still - Symphony No.4, 'Autochthonous' (UK première) Our concert begins with Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture. Composed in 1880 and dedicated to the University of Breslau, Brahms conjures up less of a sense of the academic student but more of the comradeship in the student world. We are proud to welcome Linton Stephens to perform the Bassoon Concerto by English composer, Eric Fogg. Written in 1931, it is an exciting, three movement work with the most glorious Chaconne as its 2nd movement. The outer movements display all the fun, cheekiness and virtuosic nature of the bassoon. We continue with one of Lili Boulanger’s final works, D’un Soir Triste. This short but powerful piece displays the conflict of a terminally ill Lili Boulanger confronting her own mortality. We close our concert with the UK première of William Grant Still’s Symphony no. 4, ‘Autochthonous’. Still’s original programme note states that the symphony ‘speaks of the fusion of musical cultures in North America.’ Join us for this amazing work, full of melody and the human spirit.

  • Crack out the bunting! Over 25 years, Luke Wright has built up a reputation as one of Britain’s most popular live poets. This year he tries to celebrate his Jubilee but ends up taking a deep dive into himself, throwing up questions about class, privilege and his adoption. Wright was adopted as a baby and grew up believing that his adoption “wasn’t a big thing.” But one night he idly stumbled across his birth mother on Facebook. This window to a world that might have been his throws up deep questions about privilege, familial love, and destiny.

  • Scarborough debut for the leader of the award winning band, The Deep Dark Woods. Boldt is the lead singer and songwriter in The Deep Dark Woods, crafting beautiful, intimate songs that are steeped in traditions found in places like English folk music, country blues, and 60s R&B. He was born on the vast prairie, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but moved to Chemainus, BC when he was 19, where he started writing songs. While people often equate the music of The Deep Dark Woods with a prairie sound, it was in Chemainus that Boldt truly cracked open his chest to bleed out his first songs. Then, in the summer of 2005, Boldt moved back to Saskatoon to form The Deep Dark Woods. It’s been over ten years since the band formed, and it wouldn’t be hyperbole to say that The Deep Dark Woods are one of the most successful bands to have risen from the dust of the middle of nowhere on the prairie. After five albums and extensive tours across Canada, The US, and Europe, accolades for the band have piled up. They’ve been nominated for a Juno as well for songwriter of the year at The Western Canadian Music Awards [WCMA]. They won two Canadian Folk Music Awards and two WCMAs for Group of the Year. They were nominated for Best New Group alongside Alabama Shakes and Dawes at the 2012 Americana Music Awards, and played the award show at the Ryman Auditorium (formerly The Grand Ole Opry House). Speaking of playing live, aside from travelling around the world, they’ve played most of the major Canadian Folk Festivals, as well as Bonnaroo, The Newport Folk Festival, and Austin City Limits Fest. The Deep Dark Woods have opened for Merle Haggard, Blue Rodeo, Robert Earl Keen, and Further, which features members of The Grateful Dead. Boldt himself played a show with Phil Lesh from The Grateful Dead in Lesh’s Terrapin Family Band last May. Boldt’s living in Nova Scotia these days, having just released a new album, Changing Faces, which finds him continuing to dig through the past to create spellbinding music for the present. He’s driven by influences like Shirley Collins, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Bob Dylan, and The Stanley Brothers, but even as he mines the past, he’s not trying to contemporize these sounds. He just happens to be making newly recorded music in the same vein, the way they used to make it, before the world got so fast and cluttered. Warm. Intimate. Haunting. Like

  • An exhibition of portraits of cultural icons from different generations and backgrounds, by Scarborough-born photographer Derrick Santini, opens at Scarborough Art Gallery in the spring. Included in the exhibition are portraits of famous musicians, entertainers and actors, including Adele, Dame Judi Dench, Idris Elba, One Direction and Stephen Graham. Self Made refers to Derrick’s own story of how he has shaped a professional career as a celebrated photographer and showcases the unique and inspiring individuals who have contributed significantly to British culture and made their mark in, and on, Britain in portraits taken over the last 30 years. Derrick Santini says: “After completing my BA Hons in Photography and Communication my professional career began. I was soon shooting a host of musical artists, for press and artwork. I love music so it felt natural to be working with musicians: lots of portraits for a diverse array of publications, from Vice to Vogue, agencies and companies in the UK, Europe and America. “As a photographer I have spent my life searching out something to photograph, hunting elusive moments, and channeling desired ones. These decisive moments, split seconds in time, create a photograph, which in itself is the very essence of the art of photography. Amazing, incredible timeless moments, seen, cajoled, spirited, ultimately captured in that moment and thus born to the world.” Dorcas Taylor, Head of Collections and Interpretation at Scarborough Museums and Galleries, says: “Visitors to the exhibition will come face-to-face with some of the most famous people from the worlds of art, fashion, music and stage, and others less familiar, ut who they will find equally intriguing. “They all have one thing in common with us. In the same way that we might strike a pose when someone takes our photo, these portraits are ‘made’. Some might look natural, some staged. Some seem to reveal more about the sitter than others. What version of that person are we looking at? There is a three-way conversation going on and it is this relationship between photographer, sitter and viewer that is also at the heart of this exhibition.” Derrick Santini was born in Scarborough in 1965 and attended St Martin’s CE Primary School and Graham School before moving to Harrogate where he studied Photography at Harrogate College. He holds a BA Hons in Photography and Communication from the London College of Printing (now LCC). His portraits have been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery and he has exhibited in the UK and internationally. His innovative approach and techniques have seen him lead masterclass workshops, most notably in Lenticular photography, which he is a great exponent of. His work has been featured in many prestigious publications including Vice and Vogue, and he continues to work commercially and editorially, as well as publishing numerous articles on photography. Derrick says: “I loved being a kid in Scarborough, it had it all: all the fun of the fair, some might say. The summers were sun and fun – we lived in the South Bay pool through the summer. On some days it was so packed you could barely find a spot to roost. Equally I loved the black and white winters, the contrasts of light and dark, and above all I love the sea.” Derrick will also be running workshops with students from a local school. The students will curate an exhibition of their own work that will be displayed alongside Derrick’s portraits. Scarborough Art Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm every day except Monday (plus Bank Holidays). Entry is free with an annual pass (£3), which also allows unlimited free entry to the Rotunda Museum.

  • Award winning singer songwriter plays at the Old Parcels Office. Dean will be performing with his great band The Sinners. The pulse of all our lives… Irvine Welsh One of my favourite artists… very special… Bob Harris (BBC) Best UK Act 2021, Best UK Act/Best UK Album 2022 – Americana UK Readers Poll #2 Album of the Year 2022 (Sinner’s Shrine) – Heaven Magazine Readers Poll (Netherlands) Award winning Scottish singer songwriter Dean Owens is one of UK’s finest troubadours, with fans including authors Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting), Ian Rankin (whose iconic character Rebus has Dean’s CDs on playlist!) and BBC legend “Whispering” Bob Harris. IRVINE WELSH: Dean Owens’ music and story feels like a tribute to the songs inside us, the tales of our lives, reaching into us to find the threads of our common humanity… As a vocalist Dean is possessed with a voice which soars to the exuberant highs and swoops to melancholic lows that I’ve witnessed break hearts far, far harder than mine. And it perfectly delivers those beautiful songs of love and loss, the pulse of all our lives. (From the sleeve notes for The Man From Leith) Dean Owens is an adventurous, award winning, troubadour, and a natural wanderer. His 9 (official) acclaimed solo albums, mostly recorded in the US, have seen him collaborate with some of the most respected musicians and producers around (including Al Perkins, Will Kimbrough, Neilson Hubbard, Grant-Lee Phillips and most recently, Gaby Moreno and Latin rock legends, Calexico). His most recent album, 2022’s Sinner’s Shrine (recorded in Tucson with members of Calexico) has been pulling superlative-laden reviews from publications throughout Europe, described as an intoxicating, innovative, perfect, “marriage made in heaven” collaboration. 2023’S follow up (with some tracks recorded at the Sinner’s Shrine sessions, some long distance with the Calexico musicians), El Tiradito (The Curse Of Sinner’s Shrine) is a double CD release, including an all instrumental “soundtrack for an imaginary Western”. There are stories of love and lust, sinners and saints, the displaced, the wanderers and the border ghosts, infused with the dramatic Panavision desert sweep of Calexico, with Joey Burns’ guttural guitar, John Convertino’s masterful drumming and percussion, and sweeping mariachi horns.

  • After his release from the army in 1960, Elvis returned briefly to live performance before putting his music on hold to pursue a career in films. It would be 1968 before the world saw him perform live again. He was both anxious and apprehensive but the '68 Comeback Special, performed in the round at the NBC Studios in Burbank, California, was hugely popular and well reviewed, and re-launched his singing career. The first half of the show will be the '68 Comeback Special and the second will be Elvis' greatest hits and Tony's personal favourites from the Vegas years.

  • Interested in sponsoring a boat? mustering a team of 17 paddlers;? joining another team to paddle? Raising ££ for a charity?? See below - or get info. from Scarborough.Cavaliers@GMail.com Purpose: Scarborough Cavaliers Rotary will help sponsors, paddlers, supporters and spectators with a great day out, and work with all participants to raise funds for the various chosen charities. 1. Introduction & race format: The 2024 Dragon Boat Challenge runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday 16 June. Teams of 17 paddlers in 12 metre dragon boats in a series of races culminating in a grand final in the afternoon. The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers in partnership with North Yorkshire Water Park and Race the Dragon Ltd who provide the Dragon Boats along with staff and equipment to run the races. 2. Location & facilities: North Yorkshire Water Park, YO13 9QU. Supporters and family can use the Water Park facilities on payment of the normal rates and there are some children’s entertainments. Well behaved owners and dogs on leads are welcome. There are changing/shower rooms and ample toilet facilities on site. 3. Refreshments: There will be plenty of catering and refreshments to suit all tastes, including bacon and sausage baps, burgers, pizzas, sweet and savoury crepes, coffee, tea, muffins, ice creams and a fully stocked bar. The Water Park Cafe will also be operating as normal. Please note that NO GLASS is permitted anywhere on the Water Park site. 4. Car parking: The car park adjacent to the climbing tower/zip wire near the bridge/lake is for exclusive use of Dragon Boat participants, who will be allocated car park/entry identities to purchase in advance to speed access to the facilities. Disabled car parking is adjacent to the lakes and there is ample public car parking as you enter the site on the right-hand side - with minibuses to shuttle people to and from the lakes (or take a 10/15-minute stroll through the woods). 5. Boat sponsorship; paddler entry and charities ££: We are looking for generous organisations to sponsor a boat entry hence enabling a crew of 17 to raise money for charity. Boat entry sponsors pay £450 (which enables the event to happen!), and they are encouraged to select their own team of seventeen paddlers and a charity to benefit from the paddlers fund raising efforts. Boat sponsors will be headlined in pre-event publicity, including significant exposure in ‘The Scarborough News’ and advertising in social media in May and at the presentation evening on Wednesday 10th July. Paddlers are asked to commit to raising funds for charity. Often the sponsor will muster their own crew but otherwise Scarborough Cavaliers will seek to pair up paddlers without a sponsor with a benefactor. Paddlers should be reasonably fit and able to swim fifty metres with buoyancy aid (provided). 6. Timeline: Registration form: See below – please register as soon as you have decided to join in. Invoices for boat entries: issued in March for payment by 30 April. (An information meeting will be available in March for participants – as needed). Joining details for teams of paddlers will be sent out in mid-May followed by a pre-paid entrance pack (car park entrance and identity wrist bands for entry to Dragon Boat area). Presentation evening: Wednesday 10th July. 7. Donations – process: Donations for chosen charities/causes will go to the team ‘Giving page’ on the ‘Enthuse’ platform hosting the Dragon Boat challenge 2024 alongside the other teams. Full details sent out at time registration. PLEASE do NOT make other fund-raising arrangements. 8. Prizes, on the day and at the presentation evening: Medals for overall team winners will be presented on the day. Winners in the special categories of paddlers such as fastest mixed teams; fastest Charities; best dressed; etc. will be recognised at the presentation evening. 9. Distribution of funds raised to Charities nominated by boat teams At the presentation evening Charities will receive funds raised on their behalf (any gift aid due and collection fees will follow). Expect good press coverage. If you have not already done so, even if you are not quite ready to register, PLEASE HELP OUR PLANNING BY emailing us an early indication of your interest by 29th January in: § Sponsoring a boat & mustering a paddling crew to form your own team, § Sponsoring a boat & pairing up with other (including incomplete) crews to form a team. § Forming a team (or part team, or individually) paddling as a crew - if a sponsored boat is available. ALSO: Your preferred charity (Scarborough Cavaliers will work with them to foster their support and publicity for the paddler fund raisers). • Richard Hawley is synonymous with his native city of Sheffield. He has released nine studio albums over the last twenty years, with two being nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. He is also a Brit nominee and received a South Bank Award in 2007. In 2023 he received 2 Olivier Awards for best Musical and best Music for his Musical Standing At The Sky’s Edge which was staged at The National Theatre and The Crucible in Sheffield. Over the years, Richard has become as well known for his guitar-playing as his singing. He has duetted with Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra and Shirley Bassey, and played with (amongst many more) Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Paul Weller, Manic Street Preachers and Pulp, the band he played guitar with for a number of years. Best known for his mix of classic song writing, soothing vocals and northern grit realism, Richard is something of a unique artist in British popular music, being able to cross boundaries from one musical style to another whilst keeping intact his own strong identity.

In 1997 Gary & Darren from Jive Talkin' performed LIVE on HEART FM with THE BEE GEES and received great compliments from both Maurice and Barry Gibb. As with the original Bee Gees, Jive Talkin' is very much a family affair, with brothers Gary and Darren Simmons taking the roles of Barry and Maurice Gibb, with Darren's son Jack joining the group in 2014 and taking on the role of Robin Gibb. The guys are supported musically by a four piece band with Lead Guitar, Violin, Cello and Drums, to ensure that every note in every song is just right! For a truly amazing experience and an opportunity to hear all the great Bee Gees hits; Tragedy, Night Fever, Massachusetts, Stayin Alive, Jive Talkin, etc, in a 2 hour explosion of music and vocal harmony, this is a night not to be missed!.

  • Lachlan Bryan and The Wildes have built their reputation on storytelling. Over the past eight years they have released four records, toured Europe and the USA multiple times, shared stages with Americana and country heavyweights and picked up a string of awards, including the Golden Guitar for ‘alt country album of the year’ with their landmark release Black Coffee. But they’ve never told stories like the ones on new record ‘Some Girls (Quite) Like Country Music’. By far the band’s most ‘adult’ work, ‘Some Girls’ is a country record, but draws as heavily upon the influence of Leonard Cohen and Billy Bragg as it does Willie Nelson and Townes Van Zandt. Lachlan, at the piano for much of the album, noticed the shift in his own approach as well as that of his collaborators. “We’re all feeling the weight of being grown-ups now”, he explains, “and it feels natural to write about grown-up things. The subject matter changed, and it happened without us even noticing it at first”. This is a benefit gig with all proceeds going to the “Save The Cask” campaign as this important Scarborough pub is under threat with the brewery putting the building up for sale. Tickets £14 from Record Revivals, Cask Inn or via the link

  • SCHUBERT ELGAR NIELSEN Saturday 13th July 2024 - 7.15pm Methodist Central Hall, Queen Street YO11 1HQ (click for venue information) Conductor Shaun Matthew Cello Christina Waldock Schubert - Symphony No.8 Elgar - Cello Concerto Nielsen - Symphony No.1 For our final concert of the season the SSO will perform three bastions of the Romantic Period. We open with Franz Schubert’s haunting Unfinished Symphony (No.8) in B minor. The symphony occupied Schubert for many years, only to be abandoned and left unfinished. This work has been a mainstay of the repertoire since its première in 1865. We welcome back East Yorkshire local and virtuoso cellist, Christina Waldock. Christina delighted audiences with her warm, introspective interpretation of the Dvořák Cello Concerto. Tonight, Christina will perform Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor - a work that needs no introduction. We close our season with one of our Musical Director’s favourite composers, Carl Nielsen, and his Symphony No.1 in G minor. A direct contemporary of Jean Sibelius, Nielsen’s symphonies are at the forefront of 20th Century symphonic development. Join us for this joyous close to our 2023/2024 season.

  • This summer we welcome Yorkshire heroes Bad Boy Chiller Crew to the Scarborough Spa. Bradford’s BBCC are MCs Kane, GK and Clive. Deeply influenced by the ‘bassline house’ clubbing heritage they grew up around in the North of England as well as emergent UK and US rap. The boys’ have created something of their new sound, lacing pacey 4×4 bassquakes with a frantic lyrical fire that veers from infectious ear-worm hooks to wry observational punchlines. Think The Streets meet T2’s ‘Heartbroken’. Embracing the term ‘charva’ as a way-of-life, together they channel the nuances and absurdities of northern street life into hugely addictive tunes. The crew made BRIT Awards history this year, arriving at the esteemed red carpet via horse and carriage in true BBCC style, and the boy’s performed live at the show to a star-studded audience, having been gleefully nominated for Group Of The Year. The crew’s debut album “Disrespectful” was met with widespread acclaim when it was released, peaking at #2 on the Official Album Charts, second only to Ed Sheeran in an epic and well fought chart battle. “BMW” also breached the UK Top 10, going onto be one of the best-selling singles of 2022. The crew made standout appearances at some of the biggest festivals, including but not limited to Primavera Sound, Glastonbury and Parklife. More recent singles include "Spaceship", “When It Rains It Pours”, “Jurgen Kropper” (feat. Local) & “George Best” (feat. Tom Zanetti) marked the beginnings of a fresh new chapter for the boys, keep your eyes peeled for more. The Crew then stormed into their biggest headline tour to date, performing sold-out shows at a multitude of venues across the country. Grip tightly to the handlebars as we enter the next cycle of BBCC’s ascendancy!

If you haven't been there before, then make sure you come. It's a cracking venue and you can even have a paddle in the sea before the show!” One of Britain’s most enduring success stories, James have sold more than 25 million records worldwide since forming in Manchester in the early 1980s – gaining both critical and commercial acclaim. Their unique craftsmanship, creativity and musical legacy has made them one of the most influential British bands of the last four decades. A sensational live band, who continue to sell-out arenas across the UK and beyond, James are no strangers to Scarborough OAT having headlined the 8,500-capacity venue three times before – in 2015, 2018 and 2021. Sheffield favourites Reverend and the Makers – fronted by legendary singer songwriter Jon McClure – celebrated a welcome return to the UK Top 10 in 2023 with the release of their critically acclaimed seventh studio album Heatwave in the Cold North. An incredible live band with such anthems as Heavyweight Champion of The World, Letter To My 21 year Old Self, He Said He Loved Me, Silence Is Talking, Bassline and Black Widow, this is a long-awaited debut for them at Scarborough OAT. Nottingham-based indie rock trio GIRLBAND! – who have supported the likes of Jake Bugg, L.Devine and The Oozes, and are set for a big 2024 – will open the show on what promises to be an unmissable night.

  • Bill is a comedian, actor, musician and author known for his role in the cult sitcom Black Books, as team captain on the anarchic music quiz Never Mind the Buzzcocks, his appearances on the freewheeling panel show QI and his many critically acclaimed UK and international stand-up tours. He was crowned Strictly Come Dancing champion 2020. Bill’s other notable TV work includes the two-part series Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero for BBC Two about the Victorian naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace, and a brilliant deconstruction of the way orchestras work in Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra, both garnering much acclaim and winning international awards. Bill’s comedy is a fusion of the surreal and the intelligent, blending stories, poetry and deft wordplay that takes aim at the absurdities of our world, set against an impressive array of weird and wonderful instruments. Music is the defining feature of his live shows, where his expertise allows playful interpretations of classic styles such as Tom Waits singing Old Macdonald or Kraftwerk singing the Hokey Cokey… as the Sunday Times says, “Comedy’s Mozart”. Bill is a veteran of UK festivals having performed at Latitude, Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, Sonisphere, and the Eden Project. His current arena-filling Thoughtifier tour is playing to sold-out audiences across the UK and Europe.

  • Welcome return visit for Robert after his splendid, sold out show last year. Change is in the air for award-winning artist Robert Vincent. The Liverpool singer/songwriter will release his fourth studio album in 2023 and his music is riding the winds of change with Vincent revealing “I’m learning how to lower my barriers and have made a more personal album than ever before.” “He's the Real Deal” - Bob Harris OBE (BBC Radio 2) It was the start of 2020 when Robert’s third LP, the critically-acclaimed ‘In This Town You’re Owned’, was released by Thirty Tigers and walked straight into a worldwide pandemic. Despite stalled promotional plans and tours, the record resonated enough to win the Americana Music Association UK’s ‘Album Of The Year’ award for 2021. Receiving critical acclaim, the record also charted at number 2 in the UK Americana Charts and American Songwriter Magazine named ‘In this Town You’re Owned’ in its top 20 albums (every genre) of 2020. “I had to try to take the positives as an artist’ Robert says when recalling the experience of lockdown. “I hadn’t had any time off from performing in many years and that gave me a bit of a reset…but I’m now looking ahead to a successful year and excited to be playing new songs to people”. It was Vincent’s powerful and soulful voice that attracted acolytes such as Bob Harris, Paul Carrack and Mary Chapin Carpenter. In 2016, Harris awarded Robert with his ‘Emerging Artist’ of the year award at the inaugural UK Americana Awards show describing Vincent as “absolutely magnetic” and “the real deal”. In 2018 following the release of ‘I’ll Make The Most Of My Sins’ (AMAUK Album of The Year 2018) Robert was invited to perform on the BBC ‘Old Grey Whistle Test, For One Night Only’ closing the show. It was this performance that would propel him to number 1 and 2 in the iTunes Album and Singles Charts. Maintaining his status as one of the most acclaimed voices in the UK Americana scene, Robert’s new songs represent a left turn for an artist who is ready for something more. The new album “has more of a concise sound,” Robert says. “The songs arrived throughout 2022 and are born from personal experiences, rather than the social commentary of the last album. This is a very intimate set of tunes.” The record has captured said intimacy. Robert’s core band (Anna Corcoran on piano, vocals; Jim Kimberley, drums; Danny Williams, bass; Adrian Gautrey, guitar, keys) gathered under the eye of engineer Jon Withnall (Coldplay, I Am Kloot) and performed the music live in the studio. With the fantastic addition of featured guitarist Joe Coombs and award winning producer Ethan Johns (Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Ray Lamontagne, Laura Marling) once again mixing the album. Johns, also a gifted instrumentalist, has added extra drums, percussion, guitar as well as bringing his unmistakable creative flare to the mixing process. “A phenomenal, spiritual listen” - Sunday Times Album Review Robert continues to tour extensively showing his versatility as both a solo performer and with a full band. Notable performances include 2023 Celtic Connections at Glasgow Theatre Royal with Mary Chapin Carpenter, showcase performances at Americana Fest in Nashville, Tennessee, supporting Roger Waters at Hyde Park, Tours with Paul Carrack and Duane Eddy who gifted him with one of his signature ‘Gretsch’ guitars after his 80th birthday celebration at The London Palladium. Following on from a busy start to the year and now into festival season and gigs across the summer months, Autumn 2023 will see Robert embark on an extensive tour to accompany the release of the first singles from the new album.

  • Jack’s planning a big party for his wife’s birthday. He’s pulling out all the stops and has booked a touring theatre company to perform in the main hall of the family home. The only problem is that Jack is getting a bit forgetful in his old age and can’t remember all the details of the booking… The Homelight Theatre Company is on its knees. They desperately need a well-paid gig and Jack’s booking is very well paid. Pinning him down on the details has been tricky and something doesn’t feel quite right. Alan Ayckbourn’s 90th play is a celebration of theatre, a delightfully dark farce lifting the lid on the performances we act out on a daily basis. Mr A's Amazing Days: September will also bring a special fundraising event with our Director Emeritus Alan Ayckbourn. Mr A’s Amazing Days (13 to 15 September 2024) will include a rehearsed reading of one of several plays the renowned writer penned during lockdown, as well as other treats for Ayckbourn fans – watch this space for more information coming soon! Preview: On Thursday 5 September ticket prices are capped at £16 for all seats Socially distanced performance: Wednesday 11 September, 7.30pm

  • Johnny Hates Jazz, comprising of Clark Datchler (song writing, vocals, keyboards) and Mike Nocito (production, engineering, guitars), achieved prominence in the late 1980s with a string of hits, notably "Shattered Dreams." Released in March 1987, the song reached top 5 in the UK, mainland Europe, Asia, and secured the second position in Japan. This was followed by global successes like the anti-war anthem "I Don’t Want To Be A Hero," "Turn Back The Clock" (featuring Kim Wilde),"Heart Of Gold," and "Don’t Say It’s Love." In 1988,"Shattered Dreams" reached number 2 on the US Billboard chart and topped the US Adult Contemporary chart. That same year, the album "Turn Back The Clock" entered the UK charts at number 1, selling over four million copies and achieving triple-platinum status. After parting ways at their peak, Johnny Hates Jazz reunited in 2010 and released the album "Magnetized" in 2013, the title track becoming an instant radio hit in the UK. In 2018, the band marked the 30th Anniversary of "Turn Back The Clock" with a special edition featuring new acoustic versions of every song. Their 2020 release, "Wide Awake," drawn on inspiration from their musical roots in the 1970s. In addition, Clark has also co-written new material for Mike and The Mechanics with Genesis legend Mike Rutherford. Now, for the first time in 36 years Johnny Hates Jazz will be embarking on their first ever headline tour of the UK and overseas. With a brand-new show, surrounded by world-class musicians, they’re ready to captivate audiences across the globe.

  • China Crisis, emerged in 1981 from their native Kirkby as the song writing duo of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist / vocalist Eddie Lundon, who over the years have been accompanied by a gifted and creative but ever-mutable group of musicians both on stage and in their recordings. Citing influences as varied as Davie Bowie, Stevie Wonder and Eric Satie, it’s not entirely surprising that their sound was distinctive amongst their peers, often combining elements of jazz, reggae, country and other styles with their own unique melodies and harmonies. The band have just released their “40th Anniversary: Live from the Liverpool Philharmonic”, a lovingly produced live concert video from their inaugural 40th Anniversary show which features songs from every one of their albums (some never performed live), recorded in their hometown with an all-star 16-piece China Crisis band. With a combination of truly engaging music, a good bit of Scouse humour, and the clear kinship the band have with their fans, any China Crisis show is one you leave happier for having been part of. Their live performances are truly a must-see.

  • Scarborough debut for this alt.country sensation. Americana/Alt-Country songwriter Karen Jonas knows how to tell a story. Her new album The Restless (3.3) is “a stunning collection of dreamy and dark alt-country confessionals; a deep exploration of love and vulnerability from one of Americana’s most hopeless romantics” (Holler.Country). With “vocals that twist and snap with tension and emotional depth” and a dynamic band, it’s no wonder Karen is turning heads all around the world (Country Music People, U.K.). Flanked by her longtime guitarist the inimitable Tim Bray, bassist Seth Morrissey and Seth Brown on drums, she dazzles with energy that showcases their nine-year touring chemistry and the true joy of their art. Karen has released five full-length records and is a three-time Wammie (Washington Area Music) Award winner for Best Country and Americana Artist, Mid Atlantic Song Contest winner, Ameripolitan Award nominee, and official SXSW and UK Americanafest Showcasing Artist. As Parklife Mag DC put it, “the voice of country music in the DMV is a big, bright voice that belongs to Virginia native Karen Jonas.” KIND WORDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD her skill in weaving words and phrases into her lyrics is one that few others can match - Country Music People, U.K. Karen Jonas has experienced enough bitter disappointments to be able to sing reliably about fate's blows, broken dreams, and recurring demons - Rolling Stone Germany imaginative and inspired work - Saving Country Music collaborative chemistry, laser-sharp dynamics and intricate arrangements - Folk and Tumble, Ireland the versatility of Karen Jonas is fascinating, enjoyable and successful! • British Soul Singer and former lead vocalist on the band M People Heather Small, will be performing in the Grand Hall this October. Heather joined her first band Hot!House who released two albums in the late 80's. As Part of M People, hits such as 'Moving On Up', 'One Night In Heaven' and 'Search For The Hero' and albums like Elegant Slumming, Bizarre Fruit and Fresco achieving massive worldwide success, Heather became one of the seminal British voices of the 1990s, with the band winning the Best British Dance Act Award at the Brits in 1994 and 1995, as well as the Mercury Music Prize for Elegant Slumming. Heather has since had great successes with two solo albums – the title track of her 'Proud' album has gone on to become the soundtrack to a whole host of very special events including London's successful 2012 Olympic bid, the 60th anniversary of VE Day in Trafalgar Square, the launch of Queen Mary 2, the Tsunami Relief Concert, England's victory at the Rugby World Cup celebrations, and the official ceremony marking the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London. In 2008, Heather embarked on a journey that would see her dance her way into the public’s affection as she became a contestant in Series 6 of the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Heather's infectious personality and her trademark sense of humour earned her appearances on many national TV shows, more recently Heather appeared on The Masked Singer UK were she again showed her incredible vocals and personality. Over the last few decades Heather, along with her band have successfully toured the UK performing at over 30 venues per year to sell-out crowds. She also continues her TV work with regular slots on music, entertainment, and politics shows. Heather previously teamed up with singing sensations Anastacia and Lulu for the critically acclaimed 'Here Come The Girls' – an unforgettable night of feel-good party music and dance, touring arenas across the UK and Ireland. So what gives Heather the impetus to keep moving forward, to keep challenging herself, to keep trying new things and not resting on her laurels? 'If you got the feeling I do when I sing' she smiles, 'you'd understand'.

  • Art pop and rock icons 10cc, have announced the addition of a further 25 concerts to their The Ultimate Ultimate Greatest Hits Tour for Autumn 2024. Considered one of the UK’s premier live touring bands, the extra shows come off the back of the band’s most successful UK tour to date, with 18 concerts through March, including an advance sell-out at London’s 5,200-seat Royal Albert Hall. Having also recently announced an extensive US tour, their first in more than three decades, playing venues such as the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Theater at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles and Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, 10cc’s classic ballad I’m Not In Love, which reached No 2 in the Billboard charts, being included in the soundtrack for Disney’s blockbuster film Guardians of the Galaxy has certainly help raise interest there. Known for their impeccable live performances, their catalogue of hits sees the band seamlessly transition from art-pop to mock-reggae and impressively harmonised ballads, to prog rock epics Somewhere In Hollywood and Feel The Benefit. Three of their 11 UK Top 10 hits reached No 1– Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday – and made the charts worldwide, which explains the band’s extensive touring schedule which has taken them Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Iceland, Latvia and from Scandinavia down through mainland Europe. At the helm is 10cc founding co-member Graham Gouldman, who says, “What is particularly satisfying is seeing our audience demographic changing with more and more younger people coming to our gigs. The shows in March have been our most successful in the UK and that is very gratifying, as we are only doing what we love – playing the music of 10cc.” The band line-up comprises Gouldman on bass guitars, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and vocals; Rick Fenn - lead guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals; Paul Burgess - drums, percussion, keyboards; Keith Hayman - keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals and Andy Park - electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, percussion, mandolin, keyboards, vocals. They’ll be heading to Scarborough Spa on Tuesday 15th October 2024.

  • When Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden first went on the road as Boyzlife – the supergroup made up of the former Boyzone and Westlife members – they never imagined that six years later they would be preparing to release an album of original material. “The whole concept of the band at the start was that we wanted to do an autobiographical show,” says Keith. “Instead of doing what everybody else does and write their life experiences through the music business in a book for people to read, we decided to actually tell people the stories out loud.” As members of two of the most successful boy bands in the world, Boyzone and Westlife, and having collectively sold over 55 million records around the world and racking up a whopping 17 Number One singles in the UK, Keith and Brian had stories to tell. “We were just giving our fans an idea from our perspective of how our life changed from being an ordinary teenager growing up in Dublin, to jetting around the world and performing in some of the most amazing venues around the world,” Keith continues. “The stories were about the people we got to meet, the artists we got to perform with and the artists we became friends with.” Indeed, since their conception in 2016, Boyzlife have toured extensively around the UK, Europe, southeast Asia, the Middle East, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, playing to over 200,000 fans in the process.

  • A prodigious kid who grew up on the poetry of Eliot and Lawrence, the prose of Steinbeck, Woolf, and Hemingway, and the music of Bob Dylan, Steve Harley soon realised his life would be preoccupied with words and music. He met The Rolling Stones as a kid, and the die was cast. After working as a newspaper reporter, he switched to rock’n’roll, enjoying huge success with Cockney Rebel and such hits as Sebastian and the iconic Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me). Acting off-Broadway and in London, he recorded the title track of The Phantom Of The Opera with Sarah Brightman, while also finding time to write for Rod Stewart, among others, before playing Glastonbury Festival three times, the Isle of Wight festival and receiving numerous awards. And now, it’s time to reflect. Come Up And See Me… And Other Stories, will feature music and stories, as Steve tells stories about his career, while playing acoustic versions of the biggest hits. Steve will be accompanied by long-standing band member Barry Wickens.

Or do we...? Because what if that cave was more magical than Aladdin or the sorcerer had ever imagined? What if the cave he wandered into isn’t the cave he wanders out of? What if, in fact, Aladdin finds himself outside Hairy Bob’s cave on a cold winter’s night? A wind ravaged Marine Drive is no place for a lad in threadbare clothes and sandals. He'll need to get from Scarbosia (oh yes) back to his home, but it’ll take more than a genie's three wishes - especially when he's blown the first two on hot chocolate and a Parka! • The Blow Monkeys are unique with a career spanning over 40 years. Always making new music, always stretching their own musical boundaries. With worldwide hits such as the classics “Digging Your Scene” and “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way”, they became household names but there was always so much more going on with these simian soulsters. Their relentless desire to move forward, to collaborate, to be socially engaged and to have something to contribute. Back in the 80’s they worked with people as varied as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Cheb Khaled and even Jamaican Toaster EEK-a-Mouse!. “No band since The Clash in their early 80’s heyday had attempted to act as a sounding board for such politically engaged, eclectic music". Dr Robert even took time out to release one of the UK’s first homegrown ‘house’ records “Wait”, his top 5 duet with Chicago soul diva Kym Maselle. And so the journey continues. Reformed in 2008 The Blow Monkeys have been incredibly productive releasing six new albums and playing hundreds of concerts. Their latest album “Journey To You” ( 2021) was recorded during ‘lockdown’ and features the extraordinary single “Time Storm” . BMG have also re-released their classic album from 1986 ‘Animal Magic’ as part of their “Iconic” series. It comes as a 4 CD boxset and tasty white vinyl limited edition with extra tracks and rarities galore. These Monkeys continue to evolve. From their beginnings on the underground club scene right through to their appearance on the biggest selling soundtrack of all time “Dirty Dancing” (You Don’t Own Me) and beyond. Long may they swing.

The tour will give Midge the opportunity to showcase the musical breadth and versatility of his extensive song catalogue written during the past 50 years; giving old and new fans alike a truly remarkable night of hits and rarely heard gems. Midge says “I performed live long before I was ever allowed anywhere near a recording studio and as much as I love spending time writing and recording, live music remains my first love. This ‘Catalogue’ tour will allow me to not only play a wide selection of hits from my past but perform some of the most requested favourites. Revisiting these moments from my musical life is something I am really looking forward to sharing”. Midge Ure has had an unrivalled career earning him Ivor Novello, Grammy and BASCAP awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records during the past five decades. His story includes the early teen glam rock of Silk, his foray with The Sex Pistols Glen Matlock for The Rich Kids into the 80’s which saw him secure his place in musical history not just as part of Ultravox and Visage who helped shape the new romantic and electro-pop era, but as producer and co-writer of Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ which led to Live Aid, the summer 1985 global concert that, all exaggeration aside, spoke for a generation.

  • Radio 4 favourite, comedy legend, and ‘the 42nd best reason to love Britain’ (The Telegraph) JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH, is back with more hilarious stories and songs performed on his trusty Yamaha organ (with built-in auto accompaniment!) In RAISE THE OOF John celebrates 40 years in showbiz. Yes, it was 1985 when he met TV’s Clarinet Man - next door neighbour Ken Worthington who came last on New Faces in 73 (Tony Hatch crucified him!)  “When I met Ken he was eating a CurlyWurly” recalls John, “although initially I thought it was a packet of sparklers, so I gave him a wide berth”, and the rest, as they say, is hysterical!  “Actually, I feel rather calm” muses John, “although after forty years and still no chart success, perhaps I should be slightly anxious. My wife Mary says I should get a proper job, but there's not time - I'm about to retire! Besides, Comet - where I used to demonstrate audio equipment - no longer exists. As for the sweet factory in the Rotherham area where I worked as a security guard in the 1980's - that’s now an Axe Throwing Centre. Oof!" But I'm still posting off my songs (on cassette tape with Dolby so it's not too hissy) to cutting edge pop acts like Chris Rea and the Lighthouse Family, plus I'm still being booked for nostalgic singalongs at the local hospice (for petrol money only) so we have every reason to celebrate my long and illustrious career. Do come along and join me in punching the air, and helping - in an orderly and controlled fashion - to RAISE THE OOF!

  • A Look At Life And A Look Of Live The hits earned their place in pop history. From Poison Arrow to The Look Of Love, from All Of My Heart, and Be Near Me, to When Smokey Sings, ABC were the band that redefined glamour and cool. Led by the charismatic Martin Fry, they enjoyed Transatlantic success as The Lexicon of Love proved as artful as a Warhol silkscreen, and glossier than Marilyn’s lipstick. ABC’s The Lexicon of Love was a brilliantly distinctive debut album, fizzing with bright ideas, and unapologetically flamboyant. Frontman Martin Fry harked back to a golden era of luxe, as though Cole Porter had been re-imagined among the narrow streets of Sheffield. Little wonder his sleek, opulent, and beautiful debut retains the affection of listeners four decades on. With good reason, it has stood the test of time. And so has Martin Fry, who will bring an evening of stripped-back music and conversation to UK theatres in celebration. His intimate tour follows a sold-out tour of the UK, which included three sell out nights at London Palladium, and coincides with the publication of his autobiography. • When life gives Rhod lemons… In his last show ‘The Book of John’, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour… But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs...with a little help from an old adversary. “DARKLY HILARIOUS. IT’S GOOD TO HAVE HIM BACK” Times rhodgilbertcomedian.com
