West Pier Development Draws Closer

An eleven million pounds plan to redevelop Scarborough’s West Pier has taken a step closure to becoming to fruition as North Yorkshire Council’s Executive has backed the proposal to re-designate a 278 square meter parcel of land from harbour use to general purpose use, a major obstacle removed.

The proposal is to turn the West Pier, currently dominated by the fishing industry, into a tourist attraction with a seafood restaurant and event space whilst retaining access to the harbour.

The proposals have been vigorously opposed by the fishing industry but largely welcomed by those in hospitality.  Is this inevitable progress as tourism becomes increasingly important to the town?

The proposed plan would be funded by a £20.2m Towns Fund grant awarded to Scarborough in 2021.

This comes on the back of failed plans for new developments at The Sands, around the station and at the “Argos development”.
