On the day known as “Sunshine Saturday” it would seem timely to look at the local holiday market’s prospects for the 2024 season.
After the frantic post-covid seasons of 2021 & 2012, 2023 saw the holiday market in Scarborough return to a more normal level. Judging from availability on booking websites it was a buoyant market, with limited availability in peak season. However, this is at a time when many hotels have closed and many more have been open only to workers from the Whitby mine.
With both the recent addition of the Premier Inn North Bay and huge expansion of their South Bay property it appears there is a direct trade off between the larger chains and traditional seaside hotels. The many hotels temporarily taking in miners are highly unlikely to return to the market, having turned away their loyal guests.
We are sure the “original seaside resort” will continue to thrive and will adapt the new environment.
