Somewhat of a legend of British theatre Scarborough is lucky Alan Ayckbourn chose to make the town his home and premier so many of his plays here at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, where he was Creative Director for many years.
Considered one of the UK’s most successful and prolific playwrights it is quite remarkable that ‘Show & Tell’ is his 90th play, both written and directed by him at the grand old age of 85.
This new work is a ‘celebration of theatre’ drawing on his many experiences working in the first theatre in the round in the UK. Jack’s planning a very special party for his wife’s birthday, even hiring a touring theatre company to perform in their own home. In his more senior years he struggles to remember the details leaving the actors confused.
He has hired the Homelight Theatre Company which is not in good shape financially so they are very much in need of this well paid booking so are determined to push on regardless.
The cast of seasoned actors Bill Champion, Paul Kemp, Frances Marshall and Richard Stacey plus a very promising professional debut for Olivia Woolhouse rose to the challenge of playing two parts, incorporating a play within a play. A special mention is due for Paul Kemp who pulled this off magnificently. Managing to assemble such a talented cast is a tribute to Alan’s reputation; who could say no to performing in his 90th production?
The plot has real life colliding with dark farce and manages to deliver an evening of pure entertainment with a generous portion of big laughs. The expertly penned lines, tight direction and talented cast are a powerful combination.
This is not one to miss. At the Stephen Joseph Theatre until October 4th
