Review – Kinky Boots

Scarborough Theatre Company chose well in selecting to stage Kinky Boots, a feel good tale based on the true story of a family business on course to fail and saved by a reluctant and unlikely hero (Charlie Price) inspired by factor worker Lauren and entertainer and fancy footwear fan Lola (Simon).

The production kicks off with a bang as the choir emerge from the audience, dressed for the occasion, setting a truly upbeat mood.

This stage version benefits from some great songs by Cyndi Lauper, many of which will be in your head as you leave.

Director Alex Weatherhill set himself a huge challenge with this show, putting together a big cast and innovative and busy set with action throughout. Goodness knows how long this was in rehearsal as nobody put a foot wrong throughout.

George Wakely as Lola/Simon really gave it his all and, in particular, delivered a solo performance where you couldn’t hear a pin drop. David Grace’s Charlie hit just the right note, both musically and emotionally and Katie Buttner’s all-round performance was captivating. Putting to one side these individual performances the entire cast must be commended.

You are guaranteed to leave the building with a big smile on your face, which we can all do with in these glum times.
