Since Scarborough Borough Council was abolished in April last year, with a new unitary authority, North Yorkshire Council (NYC), taking over at the upper level Scarborough has been without a town council to give local representation.
A blueprint for the town council, which followed consultation with local residents, has been approved after NYC made a U-turn, agreeing the new body with have five wards each represented by three elected members unlike their original proposal for fifteen single member wards.
At a council meeting yesterday Scarborough councillors, led by Cllrs Liz Colling and Tony Randerson, made a strong case for the plan backed by residents warning that ignoring their wishes would be undemocratic.
The new council is planned for next year.
