New Holiday Let Controls; Changes For Scarborough?

The government have announced that this summer will see the introduction of new controls on holidays lets across England, meaning property owners might need to seek permission from their council to use their property as a short-term let.

This will only apply if letting out the property for more than 90 days. There will also be a mandatory national registration scheme. Hotels, hostels and B&Bs will not be affected by the changes.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced that councils will be granted the power to require planning permission for properties to be turned into short-term lets, if they choose to.

The scheme should make it easier to find somewhere affordable to buy or rent in places where there are a high number of short-term lets, preventing a “hollowing out” of communities. Holiday resorts such as Scarborough have experienced a sharp increase in the number of holiday lets in recent years.

It remains to be seen whether the scheme will be adopted locally.
