New Countywide Tourism Plan for North Yorkshire

After wide consultation North Yorkshire Council have announced a plan to tap into the more than £4bn that’s brought into North Yorkshire’s economy each year through tourism in an industry supporting 38,500 jobs.

The new proposals will cover the next decade and will be the first plan to take a uniform approach across the county.

The Council acknowledge “the diversity and distinctiveness of our county” which raises the question; how can a uniform approach be adopted and why try?  The City of York, with a thriving all year round international tourist trade is very different in its requirements to rural communities on the North York Moors and seasonal, seaside towns like Scarborough.

This is possibly more significant for Scarborough as we have yet to have our Town Council established after Scarborough Borough Council was abolished last April so are lacking a local voice, exacerbated by the recently elected first Mayor of York and North Yorkshire focusing on other areas.

It is widely acknowledged that coastal communities are really suffering at the moment so we need action, not words.
