Detailed Information

Opened in 1829, the Rotunda Museum has the distinction of being one of the world’s first purpose-built museums.

The original design was the suggestion of William ‘Strata’ Smith. The interior contains a magnificent Georgian gallery featuring a frieze showing the geology of the local coastline designed by Smith’s nephew, John Phillips.

The display cases are original and tell the story of the museum, exploring the stories of the nineteenth century Scarborough Philosophical Society which brought the collections together.
