Scarborough Building Society
|
Scarborough Building Society was a UK building society, which had its headquarters in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. Scarborough Building Society was formed in May 1846 - making it the oldest building society in Yorkshire and the second oldest in the UK in 2008. It is a member of the Building Societies Association. The Society was founded as 'The Scarborough and North and East Yorkshire Permanent Building and Investment Society' and it wasn't until 1903 that the name Scarborough Building Society was adopted.
Due to pressures of the credit crunch and poor lending the Scarborough needed to find a 'safe' building society to be taken over by.
On 3 November 2008, Skipton and Scarborough Building Societies announced their intended merger. The enlarged Society became on of the top 5 building society with approximately 860,000 members and over £16bn of assets.
The Scarborough Building Society now merged with the Skipton is now trading as the Skipton Building Society.
